The two convergence Integrated Circuits or ICs need to be replaced on the board, if that for some reason still doesn't fix the problem, please let me know

If the fuzzy picture you are experiencing looks like, at least in some places over the screen, like misregistration of the colors it may be the failure of the convergence ICs.

Hope that helps.......

Color shifting can be due to both internal and external disturbances of the magnetic field.

if there is any external magnetic objects please remove them and try it.

else it may be some internal parts.

many people having this hitachi set seem to have this problem from before.

You have what most big screen rear projectors face at least once in
their life time: Convergence failure. There are two ICs called STKs
that go bad and they need to be replaced.

If an outside tv expert comes in to repair it the cost is always around
$400 for the job. The only way to keep it down in cost is to do it
yourself but you must be an experienced technician and know how to
    solder in replacement ICs.

WIsh I had better news for you.

Convergence is set by following the instructions in your owners manual.
Always try that first. But, if the convergence has failed you will
not be able to align it until the STK chips have been replaced.

Hitachi calls their convergence Magic Focus and explains how it works in the manual.

In your manual it is on page 45(sorry if page number is wrong) and says, in part:

    ---------------

    SET UP

    45

    SETUP

Your HITACHI Projection TV has three color projection tubes: one for
red, one for green, one for blue. When mixed together in the

proper proportion, the output of these three color tubes can produce
any color. To produce these colors, however, the beams must be

precisely aligned over each other so that the colors can be mixed. The
process of aligning these picture beams is called òconvergenceó.

Over a period of time, the picture tubes can drift out of alignment due
to normal bumps and vibrations or moving the TV. If you move

your TV, or if, after a time, you notice color rings or halos around
objects in the picture, you may want to converge (align) the colors.

Properly converged, the lines appear white, which is actually a
combination of the outputs of the three color tubes. The output of the

green tube is stationary. The outputs of the red and blue tubes can be
adjusted. When properly aligned, the outputs of all three tubes

should be directly over each other to produce the white lines.

To simplify convergence, HITACHI incorporates a function called MAGIC FOCUS located on the front control panel, which allows the

TV to self-adjust. Press this MAGIC FOCUS button and the convergence self adjustment willl start and this process will take

approximately 15 seconds. If this button is pressed during this
process, no change in picture quality will occur. After this 15 second

self-adjust period, picture quality will be optimum. (Do not move the TV during self-adjust.)

You may also select MAGIC FOCUS from the SETUP Menu.

NOTES: Only a momentary press of the MAGIC FOCUS button is necessary to start AUTO DIGITAL CONVERGENCE. At

anytime during this convergence correction process, you may press the MAGIC FOCUS button to exit the MAGIC

    FOCUS mode.

I'm having a problem with the color green being distorted on my TV. Is this a color tube issue, bulb issue, lamp issue?

This is a picture tube type TV. No lamp.
You don't describe the distortion.
A colour green picture that is twisted and shifted away from the other colours is a convergence problem. see Projection TV Convergence on this site.
If the green is smeared, out of focus, larger than the other colours like a halo around objects, things like that, it is the green picture tube. Sony has discontinued most of the picture tubes so you may not be able to get this fixed.

Ghosting and bad color, sound is fine.

The most likely cause is shorted convergence chips and possibly a few pico fuses.

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony,Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer2_bing.gif Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get a convergenece repair kit with instructions from the links below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

POOR PICTURE QUALITY

The convergance IC's need to be replaced along with possibly a pico fuse in the same circuit.Theres a large heat sink with two IC's starts with a STK number, replace them and that should take care of it.

Green screen and distorted picture sound is good but no picture

It must be connected with the color circuit of your tv, a board connected to back end of the tube. Could be dust, cob web or carbon deposit shorting a transistor. Popping noise if loud enough can be attributed to high voltage circuit fault and picture tube.

Have it service by a qualified person.

Green picture and distorted

Projection TV sets are known to have two common problems. The first problem that is common to these sets is convergence failure. When this happens the TV will usually look 3D, Wavy/Distorted, etc. It may also shutdown and blink an error code.

The second common problem with Projection TV sets is dull video, halos around objects, white looking video, or red overpowers the screen. This is commonly caused by the fluid in the lens being clouded overs. To get fixed either call in a local TV repair company or goto sites such as Tv Repair Kits to get a repair kit with instructions. Here is there link.

They have put together complete kits for most models that include the parts, step by step photo instructions, repair assistance, etc.
