My DS lite will power up for a second and then it shuts off.
The battery is charged and the problem occurs when it is plugged into the charger or not. I know there has to be someone out there who knows how to fix it without paying the cost of another DS lite to fix it.
Does either screen light for a fraction of a second? Does the power light flash once? What color? Does the power light turn green then one screen will flash then it turns off?

First of all, your DS Lite is charging both ways.....with power on and without power on. You have for almost 99% sure a blown fuse F2 on the systemboard. If you can solder you can try to replace it with a new one but be adviced, it is tricky if you don't have the skills with soldering SMD components and it can send your DS lite to the trash. So my advice is find someone that repair DS Lites or order a fuse on eBay and try it yourself.
Try if the battery is charged right, when batter is fully charged disconnect from AC adapter. Hold the power button for 5 seconds. If it does not work that means that you need a replacement battery for the Nintendo DS. When you receive the replacement batter, follow the steps again.
Really sounds like a dead battery. The DS will not work if the battery is bad even when it's plugged in. You get the quick flash of the power light and that's it.
for ur sons DS try to move it around to find a signal. for ur daughter's, trying doing the same first and if it doesnt work, buy a new charger if the new one doesnt work its the DS
