Question about Gateway MX6453 Notebook

1 Answer

Smoking computer Notebook just over 1 yr old. About 2 months ago, started having problems with the a/c adapter charging the computer, wiggled the cord then would charge. It became almost impossible to charge, then one night I pluged it in and white smoke came out of the USB port closes to charge outlet. Immediate I pulled out a/c adapter and waited 30 minutes, then tried again, and the white smoke came out of the computer again too. It is a burning electrial smell. The computer still works fine, but unable to charge. It still has a little charge on the computer, so no problem with operating system. Just wandering should I take to a professional, try to fix it by replacing battery and a/c adapter, or just buy a new computer, or whatever. I just need some help!!!!

I would suggest taking it to a repair depot to get fixed. It sounds like something has shorted out on the motherboard. I recommend taking the hard drive out so it doesn't get damaged.

Hi,

I'm writing this on my Aspire One and it's a great piece of equipment.

My initial opinion is that you have a defective adapter. However, let's try a few diagnostics.

Please do the following carefully:
1. Shutdown and Unplug your laptop.
2. Remove the battery from the laptop.
3. Wait 2-3 minutes
4. Now press ON (power button on laptop) for 1 minute
5. Then release the button and wait one more minute.
6. Now plug in the power cable (don't insert battery yet) and press ON button.
7. Did your screen light up or flicker ?

If you got negative results, I'm now pretty certain that it's the adapter but we'll struggle on. If the adapter is defective, it will not charge up the laptop and your problem is consistent with that malfunction. You can check the output of the adapter with a multimeter. You should get a reading of seventeen (17) volts DC.

Now you can check two more items things :
1. Try re-inserting the RAM (memory modules) - do this first.
2. Bios battery. It is a button type battery located inside your laptop. Replace it with new one.

If this has all proven to be ineffectual, then your motherboard or the electrical input circuitry is defective. That being the case, my advice is to have Aspire repair it. or ram (and maybe display too) is damaged. You need to get it repaired or replaced. (hopefully it is still in the warranty period)

Whatever, you may decide, don't invest more than $75 because you can buy a new on with 2 GB of memory for under $130 on eBay.

You may have a DC connector problem:

Symptoms of a broken power jack
1. If you wiggle the power cord or the AC Adapter connector on the back of the laptop, the power LED and battery charge LED start to flicker.
2. Battery will not charge in the laptop.
3. Laptop runs fine off a charged battery.
4. With the AC Adapter connected the laptop appears to be dead.
No power LED or battery charge LED activity.
5. Laptop randomly powers off without any warning.

If your laptop is out of warranty, then you can fix the problem by re-soldering DC-IN jack on the system board. If it

If it keeps connecting and disconnecting, it could be either the power adapter or the motherboard, but chances are it's the power adapter (and that's the cheaper solution too). You can usually get a new power adapter for $15 or $20, and that should take care of your problem.

Have the orange light when trying to start laptop,

There is a chance that the power adapter that charges the computer is bad and has stopped charging the battery. Another possibility is that the adapter that you power supply plugs into located inside you computer is malfunction try wiggling the cord and see if the computer trys to come on.

Power chord won't charge laptop

If you need to wiggle the cord in order for it to charge, then you have a problem.
If you have to wiggle it at the computer, you probably have either a bad plug on the adapter or the power connector on the motherboard is going bad. This situation will not cure itself. It will only get worse.
Check the voltage at the end of the power adapter cord (the plug where it goes into the computer). If it's constant even when you wiggle the plug, you're gonna be looking for a new motherboard soon. I have actually replaced the power adapter on motherboards, but it's tricky--you have to be really good with a soldering iron!
