Question about Dell TrueMobile 1184 Wireless Broadband Router (802.11b) 9U555 (9U555)

1 Answer

I didnt understand the solution for the router not working on vista

We just got a new vista laptop from Dell. Although we bought it through Best Buy so Geek Squad wants to charge us 80 bucks to solve the problem. Why wont our 1184 Wireless Broadband Router work on vista? All the computer running XP can connect to this router although the new vista laptop doesnt even recognize that it exists.

the adapter works just fine. It picks up other peoples wireless networks. Just not the one we use in our house. All the computers with XP pick it up just fine, just not the vista one.

  • Melified Jun 28, 2008

If the router wasnt broadcasting a signal how would all the other computers in the house be able to have internet on them from that router??

and I was simply trying to get an understanding...

  • Melified Jul 03, 2008

Yeah we did all that. We finally got a tech person to just tell us what the deal is... apparently (even though its not like 10 years old... its like 5 years old if that) the router we have does not work on Vista, so in order for us to even get internet on the laptop with Vista we would have to buy a new router. We are going to just take it back... its to much of a hassle.

Try hitting <Fn> + <F2> keys on keyboard. If that doesn;t work click Start > Run > type devmgmt.msc > check device manager for your wireless adapter properties --- is it working properly?

maybe your router isn't broadcasting it's signal. you may have to set it up manually. Do you have the documentation of your router setup?

because they've been through the setup procedure already and have a key to connect to router. I don't know how you have the network setup. I'm just trying to help you.

the xp boxes have been set up to automatically connect, probably. The new Vista has to be taught how to connect. Meaning it needs to be connected manually by going through the "Adding new device to Network" wizard. Once there you need to input information :

    SSID/Network name

Encryption type -- Open, WEP, WPA, WPA-2/TKIP, etc ...

Encryption key --- this can be anything you want depending on how the encryption type is set

Channel number for the wireless signal to travel on, usually defaults to 6 but they do number from 1 - 11.

Router doesn't work with Vista? I was going to suggest that you turn OFF IPv6 and use only IPv4. But if they'll exchange the router then that's fine. If you have same issue with it then do as the above suggestion.

This is a standard 12 volt power block. you can get one at best buy or Radio Shack. Take the router with you. They will be able to help. You could also take it back to where you bought it and explain to them that it didnt come with a power supply. Hope this helps

Lost internet,

Are you on vista? This sounds a lot like a problem I had on windows vista. Instead of trying to fix windows vista, how about you uninstall it, throw it away, then buy either windows xp or windows 7 and be much happier.

Need help with best connection type for college student in dorm

The enhaced version just give more range of signal over the normal dynex, regarding the internet provider it depends because sometimes you'll need a password and user to connect to the wireless signal. The dynex is used to connect from a cable signal (RJ-45)internet and then it will transfer the connection to wireless so it can be use from any laptop with wireless connection. So for example you DSL internet connection is a cable (RJ-45) then you connect that cable to the dynex router, then the router will automatically transmit the signal to wireless so any nearby pc can connect to it. If the laptop doesn't have wireless, then you'll have to buy a card to be able to connect to wireless signal or you could by also a (RJ-45 straight-through cable Cat 5e) to connect from one of the ports from the DYNEX to the laptop. Hope it helps.

Do you mean password?
Your post is difficult to understand because of the lack of punctuations and capital letters.
Remember, all we know is what you post, so try to be more legible.
Try resetting your router to defaults.
