F/up on Frig section not cooling and at time appears to...

I just wanted to followup on your solution regarding a Maytag SxS model MSD2756DEW frig section not cooling at times problem. You commented that it might be a defrost problem.
Well, right after I posted my problem, I turned the refrig & freezer down (approx to 2 or 3) as this has helped in the past. I did not get a chance to check the evaporator coil in the freezer as you suggested but did notice that more and more frost was forming in the back and on the evaporator cover. Once the frost became wet, the refrig appeared to "work" again, i.e. cool air appeared to circulate from the top vent. Since I didn't get a chance to check the evaporator coils as you mentioned but noticed all the frost, do you think my problem is a defrost-related issue? How can I determine or a service repairman identify whether it's the defrost timer or the control board or something else? I have not had luck with repairmen and was wondering how I can be assured of a qualified one. The last repairman did not mention a defrost issue... Thanks for your help... Appreciate it...

If the defrost timer is malfunctioning, and I think that unit has a mechanical timer, causing the defrost to cycle slower than it should, then yes... the coil can freeze not allowing air to pass through until the next defrost. One of the first things a repairman should check is the defrost circuit if the coil is frozen. Many times you would not notice unless you open the door alot or your freezer is quite full.

Maytag sxs; freezer frosts up no defrost + runs all the time + fridge side is cold.? Thanks.

Try to turn the defrost timer manually to force into defrost. If the frig defrost the ice then replace defrost timer. If unit dose not defrost the ice then check defrost heater and replace if needed.

Fruits & Veggies are freezing in both lower frig compartments

Good day,
This problem appears in spades this time of year, every year.
The problem becomes more severe when the temperatures in the house cools down and is made even worse if the usage of the machine becomes lighter.

It occurs when the machine is off, not on.
There is an open vent, near the bottom, between the freezer compartment and the fresh food compartment. This opening or vent is necessary when the machine is running, so that the air pumped into the top of the fresh food section, can return to the freezer compartment. This is by design.
Now,
When the machine is off, the zero degree air from the freezer compartment. can drift into the fresh food compartmnet and drop the temps near the bottom to below freezing.
Off time increases substantialy at this time of year.
Some have even recommended turning the controls colder to offset the problem, but I've no proof it works well, or even a little.
SXS and top freezer models experience it more than bottom freezer models.

you might have a few problems,, make sure to check the condensor is clean, also make sure the condensor fan motor is going... you might have a bad Condensor fan motor, and Ref Control or a Freon Leak @ the Evaporator... I would call a tech to check it out...

Frig not cooling

Check to see if there is any frost buildup in the back wall of the freezer. If so, it is not defrosting as it should.
  • possible causes:
  1. bad defrost timer
  2. bad defrost heater (in freezer)
  3. bad thermo switch in freezer
If you don’t know what these are then unplug the machine and let the ice melt in the freezer overnight with the door open. Then try it the next day, if is cooling fine then you need to have a service person replace one of the above items.
  • if you already checked this and think it is a different problem then let me know, i will help you figure it out.

Frig section not cooling and at time appears to stop but freezer is ok

There is one compressor, condenser and evaporator in all refrigerators. The part that makes the cold inside the unit is the evaporator. It's in the freezer, behind a barrier on the back wall. It's a "coil" with many small fins. There is a fan that blows air over the evaporator which makes the air cold. This air comes from the freezer and stays in the freezer. The cold food section (the refrigerator) has a control that opens a hole for air to pass from the freezer to the fridge. This being said...you can rule out the "temperature control" for the fridge.

The sound you hear could be the compressor relay, the evaporator fan or maybe something else. It could be bad, it could be not too bad. (Like a fan blade a bit unbalanced with dust)

OK,,, back to the evaporator. There is a little heater next to the coil that turns on every 8 hours or so to defrost the coil. That's called the "defrost cycle". Makes sense, no? If the defrost timer (common problem) or defrost control board (common problem) go bad, your evaporator coil freezes up, and that's not good for anything in your refrigerator. But it can often keep the freezer section cold. You can easily disassemble the evaporator cover in the back of the freezer and take a look. If it looks like a block of ice, you probably have a defrost issue. An even, thin coat of frost is OK, but lots of ice is a no no.

Freezer cool, but Frig section is not cool

Volman, take a look in the freezer section and see if you have a heavy build-up of frost on the back panel. You want to take the evap cover off and see if the evaporator is frozen up. If so, your refer did not go into defrost and cannot move the air over to the refer side. If this is the case you will have to defrost that evaporator completely. On these Amanas the culprit is usually the bi-metal which sits on the evaporator. Look at it and see if it's buldged. The part number for the bi-metal is ro131661. If you defrost the evap your refer will start cooling again normally until it freezes over again. This will give you time to replace the bimetal....Catriver...post back.
