The brushes on the base of the vac don't spin anymore but the brushes on the attachment work just fine. everything else works just fine. i have cleaned the front screen where the spin indicator is and there is nothing obstructing the brushes. thanks.
I have the SteamVac Dual and there's a screen on the underside of the unit. It's beneath the brushes and it's red. You have to pull and wiggle it to get it out. With the machine unplugged, lay the unit with the handle on the floor. In the owner's manual ( http://www.hoover.com/pdfs/manuals/F7222900.pdf ) this is shown on page 10 figure 3-2. Clean that screen. If they still won't spin, then take the brushes out. Again, with the unit on the floor, you simply grab the unit firmly and pull towards you. It's much easier to remove than the screen. I took the brush unit outside and blasted it with the house. You'll have to pull out whatever fur balls are clogging it but eventually you'll see that the brushes spin freely with the water squirting on them. Plug the brush unit back in and - in my case - they started spinning.
If the turbine seizes (as indicated by
the brushes not spinning) and not caused by other issues described on
other posts), it can be fixed rather than having to replace. You can
find instructions elsewhere on how to remove. Once the turbine is
removed, unscrew the two parts. Remove the two cogs and remove the
collar on the top of the spindle (the spindle groves in it). The
spindle is rusted to the collar at the bottom. Use some penetrating
oil, pull lose with pliers, clean up, put back together Drop a bit
of 3N1 oil to the collar to help prevent rusting in the future. Also
oil the top collar. The spindle then spins freely and works fine
(at least mine did).

Tip is slightly, do the brushes spin then? If so, then the brushes are air driven. By the spin indicator at the front of the machine, you'll see a small screen (same type of thing as is in your dryer), scrape it, you'll probably find there's a build-up of fluff. Clean off the fluff, and try again.

Posted by hoofbeats1 on Jul 01, 2008 My machine is a little more than a year old. I have used it about 5 times. It started leaking the third time I used it. The fourth time I took it out, the brushes would not spin (I did clean them and rinse them after use each time). Now the engine screams and won't **** anything up. Do you have any suggestions? My last Hoover Steam Vac was great and lasted for 3 years! Hi, I have a Hoover Dual V SteamVac F7425-900 that the brushes won't spin. The lint screen is clean & the brushes switch is in the on position. It dispenses & sucks up the cleaning solution & water; just no brush action.Help Hello, I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. The only thing that I can recommend is that you may have a bad switch, some vacs may have a broken belt or the drive mechanism inside the Hoover Dual V SteamVac F7425-900 in or by the brush assm section and is need of repair. Please check the trouble shooting section of the owner’s manual if you’re needing help and to save money. If you don’t have one then contact the Hoover factory cust serv. So, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions. http://www.hoover.com Telephone Contact our Customer Service Department at 1.330.499.9499 Monday through Friday 8 a.m. - 7 p.m. EST Thanks, Don the Vac Man Go Ahead. http://www.geeksquad.fixya.com/ThreadView.aspx?prdid=0&thid=564960 Generic problem for all Vacuums Brushes do not rotate on posted by marshad on May 02, 2008 brushes do not rotate on Hoover steam-vac upright Hello, I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. This also happened to my own Hoover Steam Vac and there was a broken part that connected to the brush assm that I had to replace, it has been a while but once they replaced the part everything worked just fine and it was not that expensive and I am still using the vacuum still to date and it is working just fine. I believe it was something like the switch for the brushes on/off switch or the part was part of the handle assm. Check you owner’s manual for the exploded view on the vacuum or also check with your local vac dealer. Hello, I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. The attachment works on the suction from the Hoover Steam Vac and it’s either a straight suction tool or a revolving brush, check the front of the machine to see if the is a switch to turn on and odd, also before you attach the upholstery tool check the end of the hose for suction, it may be that your upholstery tool may be clogged or the brushes are not spinning and a part may be broken. Feel free to check with you local vac dealer or a new or a good used part if you find out what is wrong.
