RCA HD50LPW42 problem

My tv will power on then the light will blink repeatedly then the tv will go back off. I saw someone who had the same problem and you said it was the capacitors. Is it something easy enough I could do myself or should I call out someone. And how much does that usually cost?

It comes on and I guess it's the color wheel that starts making noise. Then it blinks 5 times and goes off. Then comes back on and repeats.

    Thanks!

TV stays on for about 60 sec, then video goes off (sound not affected) light blinks 5 times. About 60 sec later video comes back, slowly as when you've turned tv off too quickly. This repeats as long as it has power.

Well I got the color wheel in which was slightly different than the original. I took the board for the color wheel index off of the old one and put it on the new one. The new one had an adapter for the other plug and plugged in it. So everything seemed good to go. Turned it on and it was definitely quieter.... but it still does the same thing. The color wheel starts up for a few seconds then quits. Then the power light blinks five times and stays lit. The process then repeats. It's the same problem I had before.

Hi,
You may have two problems with your TV. This TV has a history of a color wheel issue, was making grinding noise? Have you ever changed the lamp?
It may be a bad color wheel and the lamp, you may want to do a visual inspection.
It is easy to replace the lamp but more likely the color wheel is the problem.
The part# for the color wheel is 212184, the part# for the lamp is 260962

Best of luck

I just bought the HD50LPW42 from someone he said it needs a color wheel. When I turn the TV on the green light comes on but I don't get any picture. What is a color wheel and is it needed to just watch the...

Most DLP TVs have a color wheel. This allows the TV to be manufactured with a single chip to control the color for each spot on the screen and a white light source. As the wheel rotates, the desired color light gets transmitted to the screen. This happens so fast that most people do not see the screen refreshing each color.

Here is one source for a color wheel for your TV: http://chaparral.shopjimmy.com/catalog/product/view/id/200632/s/rca-color-wheel-212184/ . This is a part reclaimed from a TV that was damaged in shipping so it was only used during factory testing. The part number is RCA 212184.

Usually the symptom of a failing color wheel is the TV being very noisy on startup (a whining sound) followed by it shutting down. Although other problems can be involved - for example a power problem going into the assembly with the wheel (there is a motor that turns the wheel).

I hope this helps.

Thats usually caused by the CP150, CP114 and CP120 capacitors which will need replacement. You can get that repair kit at www.tvrepairworld.com and the kit contains the CD with instructions for the repair.

RCA HD50LPW42. Sound so loud it sounds like a jet engine coming from TV (very loud whining sound). I assume this is my color-wheel, but I'm not sure.Turns off when TV turns off.

You need a replacement color wheel or have yours rebuilt since the RCA color wheels are on nationwide back order. You can get your wheel rebuilt at the following link

My RCA is screeching

To install the color wheel, turn off and unplug the tv, take off the lower back casing (17 star type screws), remove the lamp door, remove the lower back casing. Look just left of the lamp you will see 3 smaller star type screws near a small circuit board (which is on the color wheel), remove those screws unplug cable from color wheel, unplug other end of 2nd cable from tv circuit board (just to the upper left nearest to the color wheel.

All you have to do is install the color wheel, plug in both cables, put the back on and place the lamp door back in its position, the lamp door pushes in a lillte blue lever which allows the lamp bulb to light up.

I'm in the process of doing the same myself on my RCA same model. Where did you buy the color wheel from?
