The BA-35 takes two A-76 batteries.

The BA-35 Solar doesn't take batteries, being powered exclusively by the photocell.

What is the battery size to replace for the texas ti-30xa, please

Hello,
I do not own this calculator and the manual does not specify the battery model number. However on this site, it is identified as EXP76. There must be many equivalent batteries.
The site shows you in pictures the whole procedure for replacing the battery.

Hope it helps.

Display is so light that I can barely read it, I've replaced the batteries and no change

Have you attempted darkening the display on the calculator through the function keys? Push "2nd" and then push "up" a few times. After resetting the calculator, this setting will always revert to a lower, unreadable setting. I'm sure TI knows about this, but they probably arent too inclined to fix it.
