I have this same HD, but the 750GB model. The other day I unhooked it to pack it up, and ended up not having room in my backpack and left it behind. I came home last night and plugged it back into my laptop, and it will not turn on, despite the green light on the power adapter being on and everything being plugged in correctly. I've had it for about 9 months, I'm not sure if it is still under warranty. I'll try the advice given here, but I wanted to post this as it appears to be a running issue with this model of external hard drive.

I can recommend one of two things here. One is to contact Western Digital and see what they can do about repairing the hard drive (within warrenty) and any possibility to get your data off the hard drive. Make sure you pay them NOTHING. Now, the other option may void the warrenty, so I'd recommend contacting them first. Basically what you need to do though is to open up the case to the hard drive, and you will most likely find a cable that was pulled out of a metal ring which was inside a plastic plug connector. From what I gather, it doesn't have a stable power connection, so that seems most logical. Now, if you droped it, knocked it over or something, then you might be screwed. But most likely, even if it was knocked over, the data is still easily recoverable.

check your external drive is set to slave and not master. some have a switch to change or dip pin to set. if not problem unplug external drive turn on computer and boot up, than hook up the external drive the computer will see it and set it to slave in bio s.
If you're connecting a known-good power supply to the MyBook, and it's not turning on... I suspect that the MyBook has died. You should replace it or have it serviced. If the data on it is very important, it might be worth taking the drive apart and removing the hard drive inside and trying to recover data. If the data isn't important, I would say the MyBook is dead. Sorry.
The essential edition is a single drive unit. if you have another computer you could pull the drive out of the enclosure and connect it directly to the computer to retrieve your data. I use an external usb 2.0 to IDE/Sata adapter that connects to the drive and the PC. These can be found online for $10.00-$15.00. This adapter has saved me many times in the past. The other option is to connect the MyBook to another computer (Mac or PC) and see if that computer will read the drive correctly or not.
