Yea this is a hard one you will need a recovery program something good that will go in deep and find all the shadow programs on your (HDD) Hard drive. if your computer does not recognize this HDD or memory stick this means u have reformatted a computer and the HDD or memory stick has been taken out half way through the format process. if you get a recovery program this means u will not get everything off it will only take the shadows of all your programs and files.

I hope this helps

If it is a new hard drive then it needs to be formatted. You can do this by going into your start menu - control panel - administrative tools - computer management - disc manager. I could be a little off on the wording as I don't have my computer handy, but in the disc management you should be able to right click on the drive in here and choose format. This will format the drive to be used. I hope this helps.

Could you confirm if the problem with the drive not being recognized is a problem with the USB cable? I have a 250GB passport and it worked fine with my XP. Once I decided to reformat it to NTFS and tried to do so by plugging into my new windows7 laptop the problems started.

1. Try to use a different USB Cable and test. 2. Open the external harddrive and replace the disk with a spare one or working one. Then test if it connects. a. If it does not connect then the problem is the electronic board of the external harddrive. Buy a Harddrive enclosure so as you could still use and retrieve your valuable data. Or slave the drive on your desktop computer and see if its connect. b. If it connects then you have a faulty harddrive. I hope you have a backup of what you have there.

Computer wont recognize the harddrive

It might be the case that the External HDD is not formatted correctly with proper file format. If you are using Windows XP right click on My Computer icon on desktop -> Properties. This will open Computer Management, there click on Disk Management and search for you device, click on the device and format it correctly and it might solve your problem. For other OS version search for Disk Management and then format the External HDD correctly.
Give your feedback here.

If this solve your issue plz rank me.

Iomega external HD not recognized?

try to access the drive forme a live cd, like puppy linux, it should be regonised in the format tool called g parted.
if your are not familior with linux, you will need winpe mini cd, **** you need to be carefull about loosing data in the drive, coz you might want to format it and clean all the bad sectors and clusters before using it.

Toshiba 500 GB External Hard drive cant be detected by windows xp

yes you could simply format the harddrive in Fat32 using your macos that would be the best solution but don`t forget to backup your data by copy pasting the files on your mac or something else and after that to move them on the external hdd again to be available on the windows machine

WD My Book 320GD external HDD - recognized by computer, but cannot read, says it has to be reformatted

Hi,

Sorry to say not that many of the Free ones are either A) Actually free(most just show you the files then request money. or B) Al that good. GetMyDataBack seem reasonably good but any attempts you make to recover or fix the drive run the risk of further damaging files.

Both of your stated problems sound like file structure problems although the later problem sounds like the issue may have been the result of impending hardware failure.

First, IF you cannot afford to loose your data, DO NOT try the following suggestions and send the drive immediately to a data recovery specialist(I recommend Armor-IT in North America, if you're elsewhere give me Region and City and I'll point you to an appropriate location).

Now, IF you can live without you files in the event this causes new damage and are simply looking for a cheap/free shot at salvaging the data, open your start menu and click RUN(XP)/SEARCHBAR(Vista). Type CHKDSK X: /F and hit enter(change X to the current drive letter of the external drive).

Then reboot your computer, a screen will come up about disk checking or consistency check, allow it to run it's course.

If this fails, try GetMyDataBack, it's free and can resolve some minor issues. If these suggestions do not work you will likely need the help of a pro. Respond with your Region and City and I will point you to an appropriate Pro.

External harddrive (MyBook) not recognize

Okay, here is what you can do to just verify that you haven't lost all the data on the hard drive (HDD failure, due to the manufacturer or a drop or heavy shake). Download a copy of Slax Linux www.slax.org 32 bit version will work, and burn the ISO they give you to a CD. I would recommend using Alcohol 120 www.alchoholsoft.com. Boot in Slax, and see if you can get the computer to recognize the HDD. If so, backup your important data onto other hard drives or thumb drives. Then when you have enough data backed up, you can format the hard drive.

Now, to get really fancy, lets say you have a somewhat corrupt formatted hard drive, and enough data free to encompass the data you have on the hard drive. Well, what you can do is download a program called "partition magic" and do a partial non-destructive re-partition. Respond if you need to get to that point so I can get you a link to the program.

Hard drive goes out in the middle of copying

Most of the time the problem can be solved by using a cable that is really short and of good quality.

or try another usb slot and see whether the problem repeats.

Now if the external drive is FAT (most of them come from factory as FAT formatted) and u are trying to copy files grater than 4GB, it will fail as FAT cannot recognize files larger than 4GB. SO you may try to format the external drives into NTFS, if thats the case.
