Hard disk making funny noise and netbook does not recognise boot device after automatic windows update and restart.

You either have an error with your hard disk or with the Windows partition files.

Some HP Mini Netbooks have a hard drive self-test feature. In order to check for a hard drive problem, turn on your computer and press the "F10" key during startup. This will open the Setup Utility. Use the arrow keys to navigate to the "Diagnostics" menu, then highlight "Hard Disk Self Test". Let the test run fully. If it reports an error(s), then you have a damaged/defective hard drive, and you will need to replace it by either contacting HP through their support site, or by replacing the drive yourself with a new one.

If the Setup Utility cannot detect your hard drive at all, then you either have a defective hard drive /or/ a defective SATA controller (this is what connects your hard drive to the computer). Unless you can connect your hard drive to another computer, it is very hard to determine which is causing the problem. You should contact HP if you are under warranty, or check in at a local computer repair shop if you are not.

If there are no errors reported with your hard drive, then either your hard drive only fails some of the time (and you should be able to boot into Windows at the moment), or there is a problem with the partition (section) on your hard drive that handles booting up. You will need to reformat the hard drive and reinstall Windows in this case.

Drivers wont mount. tried to mount them on a Star Tech drive reader. First thought that the power supplies went bad.

When you turn the drive on, does the indicator lamp flash once and then is dark? If so, that indicates a defective hard drive. When you mounted the drive in the Star Tech drive reader, did it spin up? If not, that would confirm a defective drive. If you need more help, please call HitachiGST Tech Support M-F 8AM to 6PM PST at 1.888.426.5214 and a technician will be happy to help you.

Most likely problem is a failed hard drive. You can open the back cover and remove the hard drive. There are a couple of features , like stapling and maybe duplex that wont work. And it will print a little slower until the drive is replaced. You will simply have to run a format when replaced. But it will run quite well without the hard drive.
The screen will leave you a small message that the hard drive is removed, but it will function.
Here is the documentation.

Do I need an electrical plug in to work this drive. Nothing happens when I plug in the usb cord.

the device is powered by the USB plug,so no there is no other power, if it doesn't work either the USB port is defective or the drive is defective, the last being more likely.

Setting up hard drive to usb connection

Either:
* the USB cable is defective;
* the USB-to-SATA interface is defective;
* the SATA disk-drive is defective;
* the power-supply to the disk-drive is defective;
* the parts are _not_ "defective", they just are incorrectly connected.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting the disk-drive as a "slave" drive into a desktop computer that supports SATA, to see if the drive itself is OK.

Use a multimeter to measure the voltage/amperage emitting from the power-adapter.

Do you hear the disk-drive spinning?
Does it produce any heat, when it is spinning?

I have ST3160215A 160 gb but it showing 137.4 please help!!!

Assuming that the jumpers at your hard drive is in the
right position. Run Scandisk to correct defect of the hard drive. If there's no change after the running Scandisk, then, the portion after the 137.4 either used space or a defective one.

Maxtor OneTouch 200 won't power on.

Sounds like one of two possible problems: Either your power supply is defective from the factory and is incapable of supplying enough power to properly operate the drive, Or the drive has a short in it and is drawing excessive power beyond the capabilities of the power supply. The easiest way that i can think of to test which it would be is to acquire another supply that provided the same voltage and current as the one you have, with the same type plug on it, that's wired with the same polarity. Common 'wall warts' that you may have around the house should be capable of fitting this bill, and if not, you can pick one such supply up at a retail store such as radio shack. IF the 'new' supply fails to turn the drive on, Then the drive is defective. If it does turn the drive on, Then the supply is defective.
