Question about Black & Decker String Trimmer Cordless 12" 18V

Open Question

We have a cordless hedgehog trimmer. When the trimmer is first turned on, it will run for approximately 15 seconds, then the power slows way down. The line still turns, but very slowly. We checked the battery in other 18V B & D items and it works fine

It sounds like a defective switch (part number 243614-00). You can order it at: http://www.blackanddecker.com/CustomerCenter/Parts.aspx for about $5 plus shipping.

Some of the trimmers recommend a certain size line, if you have one of these that let line out as needed, the speed at which the trimmer cuts will let out line as needed. If you have too small of line the drag for the friction let-out you will spoll all the line out. Make sure the line is the right size, They come in alot of sizes, anywhere from .060" to .125" line thickness so make sure you have the right size line!

After reading all of the reviews on Sears.com, it seems these batteries require charging and discharging 3-5 times before they hold a full charge.

All of the reviews mentioned this; they said it lasted 5-10 mins the first few times, but then they suddenly got 30-50 mins per charge after the 3rd to 5th charging.

This could be a lot of things. One thing to check is the vents on the head. IF they are clogged then it over heats. Another thing is the battery connections and temperature. When it fails take the battery out if you can and see if it is hot.

The best thing to do is to run the battery all the way down and then recharge for two days.15 mins. is kinda short time for it but realistically, they wont run for more than 30mins at best.

WEEDS ARE WRAPPING AROUND THE MOTOR SHAFT ABOVE THE TRIMMER LINE DISPENSER CAUSING THE MOTOR TO SHUT DOWN AFTER 30 SECONDS OF RUN TIME DUE TO INCREASED FRICTION ON THE SHAFT

Hi,
That is a common problem with many trimmers... not much you can do about it...except be more carefull and go slower so the weeds fall down before getting caught by the line and getting twisted around the shaft...

Cordless weedeater loses charge after only using 10-15 minutes, can we replace a battery pack or do we need a whole new one?

Battery companies don't want anyone to know this but if you run the terminals over a magnet, the memory will harmlessly be erased. However, a battery may overcharge so keep an eye on it will recharging the next time.
