This could be a few things. First uninstall the drivers for the key board from the device manager, then reboot. The machine will find and reinstall the drivers. If the problem persists, then check and clean the connection on the keyboard, and clean the keyboard itself. At this point, if you still have the problem, your only option is to replace the keyboard.

I can't turn the fn key off

The Fn key (also known as the Function key) is a feature found on most laptop computers. The Fn key allows keys on a laptop computer's keyboard to serve more than one function, a clever way of increasing the utility of the keyboard when space is limited. Dell laptops make good use of the Fn key, and if you own a Dell laptop, you should be aware of where the key is and how to use it.

Open your laptop and turn it on. Then locate the Fn key. It is located on the lower left side of the keyboard, next to the Ctrl key. Press and release the Fn key. Now examine the keyboard carefully. You'll notice that many of the keys have icons or letters and numbers printed in blue upon them. These keys and functions are operated when the Fn key is enabled, as you've just done. Test it out by looking at the lower right side of the keyboard. You'll see two keys with small blue "sun" icons. These control the brightness of the screen. Press the lower one several times and you'll see the screen darken. Press the upper one. The screen brightens. Press and release the Fn key again. Now try using the brightness keys. The screen brightness will not change. You've turned off the Fn key.

When i am typing @ cant instead @ the letter is " please help

The keyboard is set up wrongly or the laptop isn't one set up for your country.
If you get " when typing @ try typing SHIFT and 2 for the @ symbol.
You can change keyboard settings in Control Panel.

My dell laptop types numbers instead of letters on some keys without pressing fn key

HI,
If you Are writing numbers instead of letters when you press the keyboard of your laptop and you must hold down the Function key (Fn) to write normally.

This is due to the fact that the digital lock is activated. To solve this, simply press the Fn+Numlk or depending of the model, press the button or Fn + Shift +Numlk

Hope This Helps

Keyboard Produces Numbers Instead of Letters when Num Lock key is on. For example here is what I get when pressing the keys from Q all the way over to the \ key on that row of keys when I have the caps off...

I have the same problem. Click the Windows start button. At the bottom is a Windows Serach box. Type 'keyboard'. A virtual keyboard appears. Click the NumLock key on the Virtual Keyboard. This should override the issue you are having and your keyboard and keys should now work. Otherwise reboot!

Hi,
You have your Num Lock on, look for the Num Lock key (should be located in the top right of the keyboard) press that key and your keyboard will return to normal.
Sometimes you have to hold down Fn or shift when you press the Num Lock key.

Good luck.

You need to press the NUM Lock key.
The NUM lock key is usually the same key as the ScrLk key but to select the NUM lock you need to press and hold down the Shift key and then press the NumLk/ScrLk key. A LED light will light up to indicate the number keypad is on.

I get " instead of @ when pressing shift and no.2 keys....why?

Sounds like you have UK instead of US keyboard setup

Here is the fix.
  1. Click Start and then Control Panel
  2. In Control Panel, if you are in Classic View, click on Control Panel Home (top left corner)
  3. Open Clock, Language, and Region
  4. Click on Regional and Language Options.
  5. Click the Keyboards and Languages tab and then click Change keyboards.
  6. Under Installed services, click Add.
  7. In the Add Input Language dialog box, select the keyboard layout you would like to add from the list available and click OK.
  8. The keyboard layout you added will be included in the list. To set the new layout as your default, select it from the list. Click OK to save your changes
  9. You can switch between different input languages (= keyboard languages) by clicking on the Language Bar button or by pressing the Alt + Shift keys
