Depends what your hooking it up to, if its a home stereo or something with RCAs you will have to get an adapter the speakers only take 1/4" (like a e. guitar cord) or XLR (microphone cables) as inputs. You can get RCA to 1/4" adapter at radio shack for like $6.00
http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2103851&cp=&sr=1&kw=rca+to+1%2F4&origkw=rca+to+1%2F4&parentPage=search
Hook the rca part to your home stereo then the 1/4" into the speaker, plug it in and turn it on.

The volume control on my bx5a deluxe has a short. It has a "sweet spot" where it will play at one volume level. Do you have a part number or a solution?

part are difficult to find for this unit. I would suggest you take it apart and try to read the value on the volume "pot" and then get a replacement from radio shack parts, just remember to order "audio taper".

One of my two year-old BX5a pair started making cracking noise. I am wondering if it's something I can fix myself. I happen to be an amateur radio operator and used to build radios when I was a kid and...

This would be burnt out voice coils. This takes some special tools and material to rebuild them. etech.com or ebay or amazon may have the things you need to rebuild it. It would likely come with instructions as well but there are how stuff works videos and maybe youtube vids as well to watch to see how it's done.

M-Audio BX5a Speaker Problem

Not sure i can help with the led problem but i just fixed a hissing problem with one of my BX5a monitors. It developed a hiss when on (both tweeter and bass) and a very loud thump when switched off. I found a slightly swollen power filter capacitor on the internal board. They are the two biggest black capacitors, labelled as 25v 6800uf. Only one of these was bulging. The tops of these should be totally flat. The indented X on top of the caps make any bulge easy to spot. Worth opening it up and having a quick look. I could only find 35v 6800uf caps at my local electronics store but they did the job ($3 each). I swapped both out and it's now working great. An easy DIY fix, just be sure to always have the power cord unplugged before you put your hands anywhere near the guts of the thing. Hope it helps.
