Just fixed this issue. Similar to Mariss' answer. I had the same issue where I would hear fans running and click from the optical drive but no HDD or power lights, etc.

What I did was instead of unplugging the power supply cable I left it plugged in. I held the power button to turn it off and kept the power button pressed for a minute then released it. I pressed the power button again to turn it on and it turned on as expected.

I know this is a really old post but maybe someone else can find this to help them.

My brother had the same problem with his machine. On doing some research online I came across this site:

http://www.acerpanam.com/synapse/forms/portal20.cfm?website=AcerPanAm.com&siteid=7117&areaid=2&formid=3390#results

It gave the following 2 solutions to the problem. The first one worked for a while but then we had to try the second and this seems to have solved the problem.

Solution 1
ssue
No Power or Will not boot
Solution
If the unit will not turn on and has no power:

  1. Verify that the power cord is plugged both into the unit and an electrical socket.
  2. If it is plugged into a power strip or surge protector verify that the power strip or surge protector is turned on.
  3. Try another power outlet.
  4. Unplug the power cable from the unit, hold the power button on the unit down for 30 seconds. Release the power button and plug the power cord back into the unit. Try to turn it back on.
If the unit has power but does not boot into Windows:
  1. Turn the unit off and unplug the power cord from the unit.
  2. Hold the power button on the unit down for 30 seconds.
  3. Release the power button and plug the power cord back into the unit.
  4. Turn the unit on.

Solution 2
Issue
Recovery media and Restoring a system to factory load
Solution
Acer systems ship with eRecovery Managr, which facilitates the creation of Recovery media (CDs or DVDs) so the system may be restored to the original load in the event of unrecoverable issues.
How to Make Recovery Media
  1. Click on Start, then All Programs, then Acer Empowering Technology.
  2. Click on Acer eRecovery Management.
  3. If prompted to create a password, create a password and hint.
    Do not lose this password.
If asked for a password, enter the previously set password.
  4. When the Acer eRecovery Management loads, click the button labeled Burn Disc.
  5. Click Create Factory default disc.
  6. Follow the instructions and put in the required Blank DVD or Blank CD media to make a set of Recovery Media Discs.
How to Recover your system from within Windows
  1. Click on Start, then All Programs, then Acer Empowering Technology.
  2. Click on Acer eRecovery Management.
  3. If prompted to create a password, create the password and hint
    Do not lose this password.
If asked for a password, enter the previously set password.
  4. When the Acer eRecovery Management loads click the button labeled Restore.
  5. Click on Restore system to factory default.
  6. The unit will restart and start the restore.
It should state "Please wait a moment..." with the Acer logo in the upper left hand corner.
  7. At the eRecovery Management menu it will ask you how to restore.
Click on the restore option you would like to use.
How to recovery your system from bootup
  1. Locate the Alt key, to the left of the space bar, and F10, on the top row of keys.
  2. Power the system on.
  3. When the system is powered on, tap the Alt and F10 keys together at the same time when the Acer splash screen appears.
It should state "Please wait a moment..." with the Acer logo in the upper left hand corner.
  4. At the eRecovery Management menu it will ask you how to restore.
  5. Click on the restore option you would like to use.

We used the recovery from bootup version.

I hope this helps you.

Keep it cool and use the old unplug and press the power button for 4 seconds.
look into updating the bios or resetting the cmos

This is THE single most common problem with the Acer Aspire L100. Initially really happy with it, but then after five months, mine started freezing and then refusing to boot. Since then it's been very tetchy so I just bought a new computer. The problem lies in the design, it's TOO small to allow adequate ventilation to all the components - something Acer should have figured out before selling the machine. If you can boot your machine up to bios, go into it and change the temperature settings so it runs the fan at full blast. This may help, but I cant garantee it, sorry! If your warranty is valid, demand a refund.

I reset my surge protector and the computer wont power up. i think i need a new power supply. the power cord is working fine. Please let me know where i can find a power supply for the aspire...

The Acer Aspire L100 is a desktop computer powered by a special DC adapter and power cable. The computer's motherboard incorporates a fuse designed to prevent any power surges from damaging the computer. If the fuse burns out due to a power surge or for any other reason, the computer will no longer function. You can check the motherboard fuse for damage yourself, then take it to a trained technician for replacement if needed

Shut down the Acer Aspire L100 and turn the tower around.

Press the "On/Off" button on the front of the tower. If the computer will not boot and the fan does not turn on, the fuse may be burned out.

Unplug the power cord from the rear of the tower

Turn the tower on its side and remove the Phillips-head screws connecting the back panel to the Aspire L100's cabinet.

Pull out the motherboard assembly gently from the back of the cabinet. The internal fuse is located on the motherboard behind the DC power jack, which is to the right of the monitor jack

Let me know if this helped..

have you tried all video outs?

    maybe the harddrive has cooked?

try another harddrive or boot from a cd, if it can boot from cd maybe an install cd or rescue disk Linux cd, does'nt matter, just a test to see if system will boot.
if so harddrive is most likely bad or setup incorrectly.
if not and you still hear noise from the machine could be video out/graphics chip.

of course there are other things that can cause these symptoms best bet is to contact ACER this is really the only course of action after trying these things, they may have records from other buyers recognising the problem from the level of complaints, and forthcoming to a solution.

if all you people with this problem cooperated/collabarated by making contact with Acer then they would surely see that maybe there is a problem, in saying that/this extensive testing would need to be carried out to ensure that these systems are suffering the same hardware malfunction. time versus worth?

these are the places i would look

    Acer Aspire L100 heat problem

go into the BIOS and disable the smart fan. The next boot will allow the fan to run at full speed, approx 7200rpm instead of 2800 rpm and the machine will not overheat. However, its will sound like an aircraft on takeoff!
