How to repair stainless steel on a dryer drum

For my Frigidaire manufactured Kenmore dryer, the stainless steel drum is part ordinary painted steel (front flange). That flange is part of the suspension for the drum. The flange rides on a nylon wear pad above the door. On both sides of the pad, there is a felt that is glued to the dryer front panel to act as a seal. What happens is that the paint on the ordinary steel flange rubs through and rusts, staining clothes during the drying cycle. I have to replace the nylon pad and felts every few years to combat the rusting issue. The felt and nylong pad assembly is glued to the cabinet flange using heat resistant adhesive.

My dryer eats my clothes by twisting them up between the drum and door. is there an update to fix this?

the front of the drum rides on a felt pad. as the pad wears down it creates a gap for the clothes to get caught in. you just need to replace this felt. sometimes called front bearing sometimes called felt seal.

I've changed the drive belt, but it seems that the...

If the drum being pushed forward makes the problem better, I would say your felt pads under the drum which the drum rides on are either worn down the metal or loose. You need to remove the front casing of your dryer and inspect these felt pads. If they are loose tighten them up and if they are worn they need to be replaced. When you have your dryer apart you may also want to try to move the rear of the drum to the left and to the right and see if the back of the drum is loose as this means your bearings are loose and may need replacement. To fix this problem however the top of your dryer will have to be removed to take the drum out (many times the top will tilt back on hinges) because the bearings are on the back of the drum.

Electric FDE/FDG647RF Drum Loose - Wobbles - Clothes hang at gap at bottom and tear. Can the drum be tightened?

The drum has three parts (depending on your dryer) all of which you can check. Under the drum to the front there are two felt pads that the drum rides on check to see if they are bad, although this more than likely will not make the drum loose. Next I would check your drive belt, if it is stretched the drum may be loose. There is also a bearing behind your drum, you may have to remove your drum to get to this and it is usually screwed in from the inside of your drum. If you can get the upper deck of your dryer off (for regular dryers if you remove two screws on the inside of the door the deck will tilt back on hinges) you should be able to view the top of your drum with the belt over it. Grab the back of the drum and try to move it left and right, if the bearings are bad enough there will be a lot of play in it.

Dryer drum is scraping something and black deposits are turning up on our clothes

Well there are two parts to the drum, there is the bearing in the back and the felt pads in the front which the drum rides on. There is also a belt, but if something is scraping it would not be that. Is sounds as though the cover on the felts has worn off and your getting felt material on your clothes, so those need to be replaced. You need to get the proper felts for your dryer than you need to look for any screws on your dryer casing that will allow you to remove the casing and get to the drum, as the pads are underneath the drum. (Note: Inside the door there may be screws on the underside of the upper deck, and the deck should tilt backward on hinges)

Felt belt, son pulled out from the front, inside of machine

the felt is attached to the front bulkhead to your dryer. in some cases, the dryer drum itself runs on that felt. other times, it is sitting just above the drum. if your drum actually rides on the felt, you will need to get it fixed because the glides will get worn and the drum will start to scrape on the front bulkhead. if you open the door and take out the 4 screws ( 2 on either side ) then you will be able to take off the front panel. once that is off, there is a 3/8 nut screw on either side ( on the top ) that hold the lid in place. remove those 2 screws and you can lift the top of the dryer. this will give you a better view of your dryer and the extent of the issue. Hot point dryer

the drum has dropped
the drum is suspended on felt pads to seal the drum edges, nylon guides at the front, and rubber tyred thrust rollers to withstand the torque of the motor and belt at the rear.
the usual cause is the rollers have failed, common fault, easy fix, cheap too
good rollers look like this
1ac2db2.jpg worn rollers like this
34b5f0e.jpg
try not to run the dryer till the rollers are replaced, the extra strain will break the belt,

  • unplug dryer(220v is Not Fun)
  • remove lint screen
  • undo screws inside lint screen holder, screwing it to case lid (so lid can tilt up)
  • with putty knife or other blunt blade, release spring catches under front corners of case lid
  • raise case lid
  • remove screws 1/3 way down front corners of body holding front panel on
  • remove door switch cable from door switch
  • lift door off set aside
  1. drum motor felts and bearings are now accessible.
  2. pull tensioner fully agains spring
  3. remove belt from motor pulley
  4. lift drum and withdraw fully forwards
  5. with drum removed check support rollers for free movement, check drum slides and/or drum felts for wear
reassemble.
  1. loop belt loosely around drum at wear marks from prior installation
  2. reinsert drum onto rollers bearings slides felts as installed.
  3. loop belt around motor pulley
  4. pull tensioner pulley against spring to end of its travel
  5. loop belt around tensioner pulley
  6. relax tensioner pulley to tighten belt
  7. rotate drum by hand to ensure belt is aligned
reassemble case in reverse order.
