i was looking around to see if other people had similar problems and a lot of the responses mentioned burned out convergance ICs - is that what the STK392-040's are??

  • aemurphy80 Jun 26, 2008

i looked at the current convergance settings and it seems to be only the red tones that are off, but adjusting the convergnce does not help.

I dont know this exact model as I'm in the UK but try the problem sounds like a convergence issue.

Look in the manual for how to adjust the convergence. It's a little tricky and time consuming but you should be able to do it.

If you need anymore help let me know and I'll try to find a manual for it.

This sounds like a convergence problem, hopefully the convergence circuitry is ok and it just needs to be adjusted. I will look up your manual and try to get you instructions on adjusting the convergence.

Your manual is located here: http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/conten...

On page 3.3 there is a procedure for running the perfect focus adjustment, start there. Here are the steps:

    1) Press the Menu button. Press the CH button to select “Function”, then press the VOL + button.

    2) Press the CH button to select “Convergence”, then press the VOL + button.

    3) Press the CH button to select “Perfect Focus”, then press the VOL + button. Perform Perfect Focus in the following sequence: Green,Red, Blue. Press Menu button to exit.

If this still doesn't work then try the manual convergence as seen on pages 3.4 and 3.5 of the manual.

Go to the convergence menu the same was as described above, then:

    1) While “Red” is highlighted, press the VOL + button: A crosshair pattern will appear on the screen. After moving the cursor to the position you want to adjust using the number buttons 2(up), 4(left), 6(right), 8(down) on the remote control, adjust Red Convergence by pressing the VOL +/ VOL -/CH up /CH down buttons.

    2) If a horizontal red line is visible, use CH up and CH down buttons to move the line so that it is superimposed on the horizontal center-line (i.e., make a single horizontal line that is as white as possible.)

    3) If a vertical red line is visible, use the VOL + and VOL - buttons to move the line so that it is superimposed on the vertical-center line (i.e., make a single vertical line that is as white as possible.)

    4) For ‘Blue’ adjustment, do the same as the above.

After the red convergence is correctly adjusted, press Menu to exit all the menus.

If this still doesn't resolve your issue then the convergence ICs are faulty. They can be replaced the part numbers are STK392 and STK040.

It looks like your TV has developed a failure due to a hardware malfunction. The hardware that failed are mark STK392-040 and will need to be replace to restore the proper functionality of your TV.
Do you have any experience with hand tools such as soldering iron and or using a multimeter?
If you do, this repair can be a DIY; keeping in mind that you will have to disconnect the TV from the AC power before start working around the circuitry. I would suggest to leave unplug for about a day just to let the capacitors discharge the energy store in them.

If the magic focus does not work then the STK392-040's are defective. I would also suggest to check for open resistors nearby the STK392-040's, specially the low value ones.

Samsung HCN473WX

you may need to do convergence to align the colors up.
the only thing other than the ic that need to be replaced are resisters and if the resisters are bad you would not be able to move one of the colors, and blow out the ic you just installed.
