Re: dvd drive is not working
Most drives are compatible so long as the face plate will interchange. You're best bet at finding one for a reasonable price that will drop directly in, is Ebay. There you can find one for your particular model.

If the audio works good otherwise (you can play some Windows sounds or go on Youtube and play a clip), then you likely have a partially bad DVD drive. I've seen partially bad DVD drives that had done exactly that. Don't know what model HP you have, but HP usually puts out its service manuals on its website and getting a DVD dive replaced yourself shouldn't be overly difficult. Best place to buy a replacement drive would be on eBay, and anything other than a DVD-write should be pretty cheap ($10-$20); DVD-writers cost slightly more.
Go to your nearest gateway service and buy for dvdrom drive because your dvdrom drive is a disposable electronic device. In case there is no compatible dvdrom drive to your laptop buy a usb dvdrom drive external. Have a nice day.
Its possible the drive is going bad or if you did not buy this new the previous owner may have taken the DVD drive out and replaced it with just a CD drive, one way to check this on your dell is to look at the picture below and you will see that it says dvd on it, Check to see if yours looks the same if it is not the same chances are it was replaced. You can always right click on the cd drive within my computer and go to properties and see what it says, Hope this helps you out and should you need any other help let us know thanks again.
CD Drives read only
DVD/CD Combo drives are meant to have support for DVDs and CDs
Of course it's not going to work! it's not compatible, either buy an external CD/DVD Drive. or replace your CD Drive with a DVD/CD Drive.
You will be better off buying a drive from the manu. As for the screws any screws you remove from the outside should not be holding the motherboard. If you question the screws take them both out but make sure not to jar the thing too bad until you have the new drive in place and screwed back down.
compaq tend to have removable CD drives, just by undoing 1 screw on the underside you may be able to remove the drive, then you just order a replacement.
for an external CD drive any USB drive will do, it's not compatibility with your laptop that is the concern, you just have to make sure that it does what you want, make sure you get one with an external power supply as compaq usb ports tend to be low power ports, and bus powered drives try to draw too much power when burning disks
