Question about FrancisFrancis! X1 - Stainless Steel Espresso Machine

Francis Francis..why do you turn off the power???

I have had this problem with my exploding X1 machine!  After no problems for about 18 months, the unit now trips the power in the house every time it is switched on..the first couple of times it happened, smoke was rising from it.  Bad enough as that is, I bought the same machine for my brother+wife for their wedding. They only got just over a year out of it before it started giving precisely the same problems.  I was hoping to find some answers on the internet, but lots of people reporthaving  this same problem, not many report a fix. This is surely a design fault of the product, but the only way to fix it is an extremely expensive trip to the repair shop. For me, doubly so! Please, any assistance. If I could source the replacement parts relatively cheaply, I'd fix the machines myself, but I can't find any links to the company website, or anyone who might confirm for me what the issue may be (as both machines display the same symptoms, I think it fair to assume it's the same problem)

I have a similar problem. My machine is about 3 years old. Typically it trips the GFI when I am trying to make a second cup too soon after the first. I know the instruction manual said not to make cups in quick succession. So I was thinking the problem was caused by the boiler being too hot. If as has been said it is due to the element touching water and this is due to scale build up, would descaling/cleaning not help...though I am not sure why that would stop the element touching water. I am still confused but will try cleaning. I also recall a guy in Williams Sonoma I think once told me the boiler burns out in close to 2 yrs

Generally in the case that a FF machine is tripping the GFI it is because the heating element within the boiler is coming in direct contact with the water. By this I mean that the coating on the element has deteriorated or the element itself split apart. This is usually do to a lack of cleaning or descaling. It is the machines defense to trip the breaker to avoid any further issues. As far as I know there is no way to repair this problem except sending it in to a repair center.

Hope this helps

The most obvious thing is the fuse in the plug. There are no fuses inside the francis francis (at least in the model I have).

My Francis Francis x1 wont heat

You should check the temperature of the water coming out from the machine when it show that is heated. If it is lower than 90 C then the thermostat inside the machine attached to the boiler is need to be replaced. If the temperature of the water is about 90C then the problem is with thermometer, and in this case is only an accesorie since the machine can faction properly and make a good espresso.

I had the francis francis examined.  It is indeed the boiler, a $200 fix if you could get the part.  Francis Francis X1 is now a brick!

Well, to state the obvious, you should call Francis! Francis! at 1-877-854-4141 and ship it to them for repair. It's unlikely you can perform a fix yourself. Have you tried opening the machine up? I got PDFs of diagrams and part lists, which I obtained by calling them at the number quoted above. Good luck! Stephen
