Everything was working fine and left and walked back into the room it appeared that the screen was flashing. I thought it was the channel but it also was on other channels. I turned it off and then back on but only the sound came back. Sometimes all three lights are lit up on the button, other times it is only the green light that says lamp. The sound is fine but can not see anything just a black screen. The remote would not do anything so I turned off the power strip, when I turned back on the tv was already on but would not respond. It stayed on a minute and turned itself off, then back on but only to a black screen. Any ideas here?

You`ve mentioned that ON CERTAIN CHANNELS THE TV WORKS FINE, so your trying to say that not all channels THE BLACK SQUARE APPEARS IN THE MIDDLE O THE SCREEN... my be that black square is generated from the broadcast center. may be your unit is good. let me ask you how many channels that your tv works fine..?
The problem is in the vertical deflection circuits which is responsible for giving a full picture. Since the set is 8 years old the money would be better spent on a new tv since more frequent break downs in other parts of the set would be more likely due to age.
The black box is there because your closed captioning is on and set to text mode. Some channels send the signal even when there is no actual text to display. You can get rid of it by either turning off closed captioning or changing it to CC1 or CC2 mode instead of text. If you can't find those settings, then restore factory settings as directed in your user manual.
probably you need to replace the picture tube or maybe theres a loosed connection in the high voltage circuit or the video circuit due to the fall. if the picture tube is the problem, you better buy a new tv coz replacing it is not practical and economical. but if it is only loosed connection just bring it to a qualified technician for sure he will not charge you too much for this problem. good luck!
it seems that your tv has a problem in horizontal circuit (with sound but no pictures). since you moved your tv from one place to another, the tv might have shaken causing to loose some soldered components particularly in horizontal circuit. if u have exprience in this stuffs, try to resolder the circuit, if not, bring it to a service technician.
