Question about Kitchen Ranges

I have a eurolec gas stove which has a glass top that closes down onto the hob. The glass has a plastic coating which has bubbled. Is it alright to remove the plastic. I presume that the plastic was to be removed on installation

i had a guest stay who thought that you left the glass top down, hence the huge melted plastic mess when the top is down now. Will i need a entire new lid or can the plastic be re done ??

The plastic coating can be peeled off - slowly and with care then carefully scrape away the burnt residue with a sharp blade knife and remove the adhesive residue with turps - mine looks new again dont think the plastic coating is essential.

I had the same problem and found the advice worked perfectly - thank goodness!

Hi - I took my plastic coating off a few months ago - it was also blistered. This morning I was at the washing line and heard this smash inside the house - rushed in and the glass top seemed to have exploded into a million pieces. I guess lucky I wasn't in the house and the kids at school. I just now came to find a solution on replacing it when I saw these older posts about removing the plastic coating so I guess the plastic coating would perhaps prevent the glass from shattering as mine did. (I would suggest those people who have removed it do as suggested in another post and replace the tinting!) I have an open plan kitchen and there is glass bits as far as 5 metres away!! I bought the house with this stove in it and I have been here for 7 years so perhaps the glass top became brittle over the years - now I am wondering can I replace the glass top and if so, where?

    # VickiVictor ... Our glass top also exploded. Our stove was built in 1994. I have rung around and found a shop that can replace the glass. The cost is $260.oo. I think that we will leave ours off now.

This would require a new hinge for the lid as they have an internal spring offering the resistance to keep the top in the up position

I have plastic melted on my glass top (son let plastic bag touch hot burner). i can NOT get it off. any suggestions?

Getting the plastic hot again may allow you to remove the bulk of it. I'd use something wooden to scrape with. I'm assuming that the glass top you're talking about is an electric stove. You have this listed under the "Timers" category and not many of them have glass tops. Dabbing a small amout of acetone onto the plastic without touching the glass any more than you have to should help you disolve the plastic so you can finish scraping it away.

Seized screws in Stoves 'Range 1000G Gas Range Cooker (LPG)

I let the screws soak for a few days in release oil but with no success. I decided the only way to get the seized screws out was to drill and tap new holes through the hob and into the hob burner mixing tube support flanges. This allowed new screws (stainless as opposed to the standard, chrome plated steel screws) to be screwed into place. Once this was done I then drilled out the heads of the remaining seized screws. This allowed the hob tops to be removed so that the oven thermostats could be changed. The hob screws were then screwed back into place and lubricated with loads of high temp. copper grease to prevent corrosion. I will also remove and re-grease these screws every six months or so to prevent any chance of seizure in future!

A few points to remember: (a) make sure that any holes in the hob top are sealed with something such as a screw coated with high temp fire cement etc. to prevent any possibility of unburnt LPG getting into the space below the hob top. (b) make SURE that you do not drill or tap into anything that could damage the cooker and cause a gas leak or damage any of the gas ignition leads etc. (c) Make sure that the appliance is totally 'gas tight' after doing any work which will disturb the gas connections, and (d) If you don't have gas qualifications and are not sure of what you are doing then get an expert, registered gas engineer to do the work for you. Don't take a chance with gas!!

Burner on glass stove top has turned black

The nice grey-flecked surface coating is very thin; the solid black is underneath. You've "cleaned" the coating off -- that's why further scrubbing just makes it worse. We did the same thing :-(

Eurolec oven fire - gases released made us sick

Good morning Folk!!
A toxicity doctor rang me to say that I have been exposed to vitreous enamel and galvanised metal.
The composition has zinc, chromium, silica so when the gas came off the oven interior, I had "gas fever, short term toxic, that would be eliminated from my body with no expected problems. Apparently welders have this all the time. It causes irritability, nausia and sleepiness. Australia has very poor metal detection in blood testing. It usually has to be sent to America.
I don't trust Eurolec, nor the company who made their baked enamel ovens - Technogas Italy, who now produce for Euro appliances.
I'm getting a new stove - ILEVE - which is a better quality gas stove all round.
Bye for now

Flame on gas hob not correct.

I'm not sure what you mean by a proper efficient flame. I just recently went through an experience I'll relate to you here. I purchased a GE Profile dual fuel range. I can get more specific if you'd like but here's the point. The highest burner on the range was rated at 17000 BTU's. A friend recommended the range to me and sang it's praises. I took delivery of my new toy and couldn't wait to get a pot on the stove to start cooking a long wait for pasta. Twenty minutes later I was finally seeing bubbles! I spilled the water out and measured 12 cups of water into the pasta pot at room temperature. That's three quarts of water. 20 minutes to see bubbles and never would it come to the expected "rolling boil". My experience has always been with electric ranges and I am new to gas but 20 minutes? Something had to be wrong, right? Wrong! Much research later I've found it is common for natural gas to LP conversion stoves to lose a good deal of their oumph when converted. GE as it turns out is one of the most notorious for a serious degredation in BTU output. After exploring GE's site I found that this same stove running under LP gas is rated(for the highest burner) at 11000 BTU's! No wonder I couldn't boil water! Back to the store it went and I am still in search of a stove that will meet my needs. Don't know if this will help you or if this is the same issue you are dealing with but maybe just maybe. Good luck!
