You seem to be wuite knowlegable about 360 repairs. Can you offer advice on the following.
I bought a 360 with the RROD and fixed it with the XClamp mod. Green lights now. However the rom drive would not open even though it tried. When i managed to get a disk in it would say 'reading', no noises just reading..Pulled it all apart, checked the belt. Although its a cheap rubber band it does not not slip as I turned the cogs. Checked the white sliding piece, made some fine adjustments to its returned position. Seemed to do the trick...here is the real problem.
When I insert a disk it wont spin. If I assist it will fire up and the laser only moves a short distance but it still is not 'actually' reading the disk.
Now i noted that the drive was quite dirty - Samsung ms28 (man 2005), which i have cleaned where i can.
Sounds like a couple of possible problems. First of all, you will need to know how to use a multimeter. From the sounds of it you probably do. so...
1) check the back of the motor for where it is soldered to the circuit board. make sure that they are not cracked or broken. If so resolder them, if not then lets move on...
2) check the lens and clean it with denatured alcohol. Do not use rubbing alcohol as it will leave a film that will cause you trouble. if this does not work then ...
3)Next find the back side of the laser. There will be two small metal potentiometers. take the multimeter (on resistance reading) go across two of the leads on the pot (there are three) two of them will read 0 ohms, you do not want these. read from any one of these to the other lead, you should read around 1.4K ohms (actally 800 ohms to 2K ohms is typical) write this down!! take a small screw driver and make a minor adjustment to the pot. making the reading smaller. Note! the pot is real touchy, a very and I mean very small amount of movement will make a large reading. You do not want to go below 600 ohms as you can damage the laser. a small adjustment should get things going. Once the laser is working the unit should work fine. in a rare few occasions you may have to place a small amount of tape over the magnet to help it actually release, but this will only be a issue if and when every thing is spinning as it should and it still does not open. Also clean the belt with rubber conditioner. If you do not have this you can use the denatured alcohol but note that this will cause the belt to dry out and crack if you do it too often. Hope this helps. If not write me again with more details!!

Interesting. Not all Xbox 360s use the same type DVD drive. There are at least 3 different brands - Benq, Samsung, and Hatachi. There are various ways of determining this, besides opening the Xbox 360. Based on the drive type, there are different versions of firmware(the software on the drive that communicates with the Xbox 360). Some firmware modifications Microsoft doesn't want consumers to know because it allows the playing of cloned dvds.
The dvd board is located at the back of the drive, it is connected to the motor and things by white strip wires, if you are removing the board pull the wire from the motor not the board, but the others from the board not the dvd drive.

Good luck setting up a business m8, the best advice is to do some research and learn every fault and repair to the point where you know it by hand.
Sounds like the unit overheated and locked up the processor. This is a comon problem with the 360. Two things. 1) there is a lawsuit in process on the 360. google xbox lawsuit and see if you qualify to get in on this. If not then look for a repair kit. I am not sure if I can refer a specific place or not. But if you google 360 ring of death fix you should find a few quality sites that sell the fix for it. Keep in mind that the fix repair should be no more than $15.00 if it is more they are taking you for a ride. It is an easy fix. Screws and washers is about all it takes. You will also have to do a lot of tear down and play with the heating of the processor a little but if you follow the directions that come with the kit you should have no problems. I repair these things as part of my electronics repair business. (I do not take mail in's though, so I am not trying to solicit business!) But I say that to say that it is not a hard repair. I would suggest a excellent site but I don't think I can by fixit rules. Sorry!!!
If the disk isn't spinning up at all then the DVD ROM drive is returning an error code to the firmware and will probably need repairing, you can check this simply by closing the lid, counting to ten and opening it again, if the drive is spinning the disk it will still be rotating when you open the lid.
if the disk is still spinning when you open the lid try gently cleaning the laser lens (the little glassy looking dome inside the drive) this is best done with an alcohol-free CD wipe or using an ordinary CD cleaning disk.
You can usually get hold of either or both from your local supermarket these days. **Warning: I have seen people on this site and others advise the use of isopropyl alcohol on the end of a q-tip (cotton bud), THIS IS VERY BAD ADVICE as the laser lens is made of Polycarbonate and isopropyl alcohol will cause it to yellow and even crack!**
It would also be advisable to give the drive a blow out with an air duster, you can get one from your local electronics, plumbing or hardware retailer.
Unfortunately if non of this helps you are realistically going to need to contact Sony to find out about your warranty status and repair options.
Never say Never, If you want your 360 Games Repaired.
I Can Offer You a service to resurface Them.
If your in The UK, you can send them To Me.

Your Actual problem is That Your DVD Drive, Or Laser Head, is Hitting The Disks, whether this is due to a calibration fault, or it,s been knocked over dropped, at any time. Which may have Damaged The Disk-Spindle, et,c.
Hope this helps.
