I was hooking up my sisters surround reciever for her and used an optical cable to the reciever from the TV. Her TV gets signal from the cable box via coax and uses HDMI from DVD player. I am stumped that...

srry but the tv is not capable of sending hdmi audio through its outputs the dvd player audio must be run through rca red and white or black if you have digital audio out to the back of the receiver on its own channel

How to connect dvd player to AV reciever

S-Video is a media type that only carries video. Unfortunately the LG unit was designed only to be a self contained surround sound unit. There are only video outputs to the television on this unit. Because of the unit having surround sound capabilities, LG felt that their wasn't a need for audio output. You would need to buy a new DVD player to allow audio from the DVD to your new Yamaha unit. Good Luck!

DVD player and receiver will not play a dvd in surround sound ?

The dvd player is responsible for reading the surround sound track, and sending it to the receiver. First make sure you are playing the surround sound track on the dvd, many have a stereo track too. Next, try another dvd and see if you can play surround sound on that one. If you can't play surround on ANY dvd I would start looking at the audio connection from dvd to receiver. Are you using an optical cable? Red, white, and yellow RCA cables? Optical will transmit any sound over only one cable, RCA cables need one cable for each channel (LF, C, RF, LR, RR, sub.) If your connections are correct, is the receiver set to play a surround sound track? Is it set in 2 channel mode?

How do i connect my subwoofer to my sony dvd player to get the great surround sound?

there will be a subwoofer pre out( needs to be amplified) or if it don't have subwoofer pre out you will have to send the audio out to a stereo reciever that has inputs for the optical ( digital audio signal )( to a stereo or surround system that has 5.1 or higher has full surround sound ) and of course L and R audio inputs and the subwoofer pre out , then the subwoofer pre out will have to be amplified by a reciever , subwoofer amp , surround sound , ect
