If this is a reader that plugs into a usb port there are a few things that are problematic with them. They use a suspension that is very sensitive to heat if you leave your reader in the usb port the power from the port causes it to heat up and fail. The other issue is the speed of the port, Most software uses a redundancy software that verifies the image by what they call checksum points. If the speed of the port is to slow this will cause a misread. When not in use don't leave it in the port remove it and keep it cool. Good luck.. Be mucho Blessed..Mark

Microsoft fingerprint reader and windows 7

Users installing windows 7 on their pcs may have experienced a problem: it seems microsoft fingerprint reader is not compatible with windows 7 so and has been discontinued by microsoft. That means, no driver update. You can go on using your fingerprint reader simply clicking the link below and following the instructions. I used that trick several times and it always worked. <br /><br /><a href="http://www.blogfeld.com/2009/10/microsoft-fingerprint-reader-windows-7.html">http://www.blogfeld.com/2009/10/microsoft-fingerprint-reader-windows-7.html</a>

How to setup finger print sensor

When you start a machine with a Fingerprint reader for the first time, you will see the following screen when you reach the Desktop. This is the main console for configuring and managing the Fingerprint reader.

Here you can enroll your fingerprint, and adjust your Power-on security settings.

When you click on “Create new passport and enroll fingerprints” you will be prompted for your logon password.

Once you enter your password you will see the main enrollment screen.

You can select a fingerprint to enroll either by selecting the fingertip with your mouse, or by choosing from the drop down list. To enroll, either double-click the fingertip you wish to use, or press the Enroll button

On the left is an animated finger that demonstrates how to swipe. You must swipe your finger three times to enroll.

If your finger is not centered, you will be prompted to move it to the right or to the left. If it’s not able to read at all you will be prompted to try again.

When you swipe successfully, you will see the highlighted portion go to No. 2 for the finger printer to be swiped again.

Once you have swiped three times successfully, the three images merge into one and you are brought back to the main enrollment screen, where the enrolled finger is shown with a red dot.

  • You can enroll multiple fingers.
  • The Enroll button has changed to say Delete. This allows you to delete a fingerprint you have already enrolled. If you used the mouse to click on a fingertip that was not already enrolled, the button would change back to Enroll.
When you click Next you are brought to the Power-on Security screen.

This is also the second choice from the main Fingerprints enrollment screen. Here you can use a fingerprint to replace your Power-on passwords if you are using them.

If you are using Power-on passwords, then select the box at the top. When you click on the Add button, you will be shown a list of the fingers that you have enrolled, and can select which one(s) you want to enable to replace your Power-on passwords.
Once you select a choice from the box, the finger will show up in the list. The first time you restart your machine after this, you may be asked to swipe your fingerprint as well as enter any Power-on passwords you have set. After that you should only be asked for your fingerprint.

  • Predesktop Authentication
    • In addition to the process above, there is a setting in BIOS that must be enabled for a user to be prompted for their fingerprint instead of a Power-on password. The Default for this Setting is “Enabled”, so no change should be necessary. It is in the Security Section under Fingerprint. The setting is called “Predesktop Authentication” Again, the default is “Enabled”. If disabled, a user will not be able to use their fingerprint on Power-on.
  • Security Mode
    • This controls what password will allow a user access to the system if they are not able to gain access using their fingerprint. The default setting is “Normal”. This will allow the use of either a user Power on password, or a Supervisor password instead of a fingerprint.

The alternative setting is High. This will allow only a Supervisor password to be entered instead of a fingerprint to gain access to the system.
Once you click Finish, you will be brought back to the main Fingerprints screen.

The Create new Passport and enroll fingerprints choice has gone. Replacing it are two new choices:
  • Edit passport and fingerprints
  • Delete passport and fingerprints.
If you choose Edit passport and fingerprints you will be prompted to swipe your finger to confirm your identity

You will then see the password screen. Click next to go to the main enrollment screen.

This is the same screen that appears when you have successfully enrolled a fingerprint.

Here again you can delete or enroll fingerprints

I trust this was helpful and thank you for contacting the experts.

Fingerprint reader activated and has me locked out after reboot

hi

here are some steps to disable finger print reader..

The easiest way to disable the Microsoft Fingerprint Reader’s default operation is to rename the highest level program file.

To do this, the DPAgnt.exe program must first be terminated.

Step 1: Press Control-Alt-Delete, so the Windows Task Manager comes up.

Step 2: From the Windows Task Manager, click on the “Processes” tab.

Step 3: Find and highlight DPAgnt.exe by clicking on it.

Step 4: Right click on DPAgnt.exe, and click on the “End Process” menu, as seen below.

Next, you have to rename the DPAgnt.exe program so it won’t be loaded at boot up time. The Microsoft Fingerprint Reader’s program and driver files are located in the “C:\Program Files\DigitalPersona\Bin” folder on a Windows XP Home or Pro hard disk.

Step 5: Click on the “My Computer” icon on your desktop.

Step 6: Type into the “Address” bar input area, and enter “c:\Program Files\DigitalPersona\Bin”

and hit return.

Step 7: Single click on DPAgnt.exe

Step 8: Right click on DPAgnt.exe. Then click “Rename” from the popup menu.

Step 9: Change the filename from DPAgnt.exe to DPAgnt-BAK.exe.

i hope you do it....

please rate me

thank you.

Dv9700 HP Notebook PC: DigitalPersona Personal 3.0.0 "The fingerprint reader is not detected"

I found this on another site and it worked for me!

"Ihad the same thing happen, and determined that you have to go back toan earlier version of the Authentec driver to make it work. I tried 4versions and the only one that works with DigitalPersona is 7.9.0.4,dated 2007-08-28. You can find it on the HP Website. It appears to beavailable in a number of Softpaqs, such as sp37815.exe, sp37812.exe andsp37920.exe. Maybe these different versions are meant for differentmodels, but they appear to be the same driver. There is a brand newdriver available from Windows Update, but it doesn't work. I hope thisworks for you.

To fix this issue go to device manager, then under personal identification devices, right click on the authentec fingerprint reader.

click on the driver tab, and click the roll back driver button...should fix the problem for you...I also tried EVERYTHING you guys mention but to no avail....this works!!!

Catastrophic Error when trying to register fingerprint

If you turn data execution prevention off (cntrl panel, system, performance steeings buton then the DEP tab) it will work.

It is better to add only the programs (.exe) from the BIN folder of your C:\Program Files\DigitalPersona\bin folders since DEP is a good security measure against many types of attacks.

The single fact that Microsoft keeps that bug around can be seen as "you will never get security with Big Brother". It is really ugly and, as an electronic engineer I think Microsoft Monopoily as somethiung to do with NSA CIA MOSSAD and wars.

I am sorry to say what my most honest intuition tells me :)

The red light is off and the reader is dead...

I've been using mine for about a year with no problems, try plugging it into a different USB port. Windows will probably reinstall the drivers and this will reset the fingerprint reader. If it doesn't come back on then, you're probably gonna need a new one. Also, check the system tray icon for the fingerprint reader. Hover your mouse over it. If it says that the reader is connected, chances are that red light just somehow isn't working. You could try taking the whole thing apart and looking at the red light to see if there's anything unusual around there.
