My janome harmony 2049 is sewing only backwards without holding the reverse button down. If I hold the reverse button down it just keeps sewing in reverse. I'm lost !?

Did you find out how to fix it?  I have the same problem.  My machine was worked on a year ago and I am now just getting it out and have this "new" problem.  Too late to return it to that dealer and I don't trust him to work on it again.  My machine is an older Pfaff 560 Hobby.  I was able to tweak the dog feed, but it won't go forwards after I've pushed and released the backwards button unless I get into the bobbin area and push on the dog feed again.

I have the same problem - Reverse Stitching even if you are not holding down the reverse lever.

Well, I took all the advice and oiled everything, but there's still a problem.  Once I took the back off to oil it I noticed that when I push in the big knob to sew in reverse (Pfaff Hobby) it stays in that mode.  I've oiled around the parts, but I'm thinking that the spring that is supposed to pull it back down into forward mode has gotten too loose and no longer does the trick.  Does this sound right?  If not, any other ideas?

Thanks, I tried all the oiling, but still have the machine stuck in reverse.  Now that the back is off I see that when the big knob is pushed in for reverse (Pfaff 560 Hobby) that it is not returning to the forward stitch mode.  I've oiled all the moving parts, but I'm guessing that I need a new spring (which looks like it's supposed to pull the movement back down and push out the knob again for forward).  Does this sound right?  If not, what else could I try?

The feed mechanism needs to be oiled. Take off the bottom cover and look for any place where two parts move against each other. Some binds can be very difficult to remove. Try spraying everything with a light weight oil (I like Tri-Flow) and let them soak over night. Then manually try to move the feed dogs with your hand. Hopefully it will break loose.
Good luck!

It could also be a bind in the slide block. This is what regulates the stitch length and is usually deep inside the machine. You can try an online repair tips site but it is a little involved. The hardest part will be locating it. Usually a little oil on the mechanism will free it up.

Where is reverse button

Depends on the make & model of your machine. Would be best to consult the owner's manual. Mechanical and computerized machines also vary. Mechanical machines usually have a stitch length lever that, when pushed all the way up, will reverse stitch, or there is a button usually marked with an R or an arrow. Computerized machines usually have a button marked by a U-shaped arrow.

Of course, if you have a vintage sewing machine, it may not even have a reverse stitch. Instead, to sew in reverse, one would have to sink the needle into the fabric, raise the presser foot and swivel the fabric 180 degrees, drop the presser foot and stitch.

To find a copy of the owner's manual, search the internet for:

Usually there's a button in the center of the stitch dial you can push in to reverse it. Hold in to reverse, let go to keep going froward.

How to fix sewing reverse

try to pull the fabric as you hold the reverse lever.....pull away from front towards yourself. the dogs pull the fabric in the opposite direction. make sure your stitch length is narrow or "1" ...reverse only works with a straight stitch foot not a zigzag. Sometimes a machine needs a little help getting the reverse mechanism going......

Brother AE2500 reverse sewing lever is too stiff to move , how does this work please, bacause in the CD provided with this sewing machine , this lever (plastic) for doing reverse is being moved down t

Try turning the flywheel and operate the reverse lever at the same time. Some machines need to be at a certain point in the stitch cycle for the reverse lever to be used.

Dogs motor?

Does it have a stitch length dial which ranges from 4 down to 0 and then into negative numbers? If so, the negative numbers will be reverse stitches. Some machines have this functionality and its very happy for doing mending or stitching in awkward places to sew backwards without having to hold the reverse button.

However, if yours is only sewing backwards when stitch length is set to 2, 3 or 4, then its probably a drive problem internally. Don't think your machine has a seperate motor for the feed dogs, probably a gear driven shaft in the free arm.

My bernina patchwork 140 will not sew in reverse when I press the reverse button has the button gone bad the button hole won't sew ithe back stitch either?

Some machines will not do any of their automatic forwards and backwards movement type stitches in reverse, are you trying to reverse in straight stitch or a more complex stitch.

The Activa is a late model quality machine, do you have a Bernina dealer locally you could ring up and ask or take it to?

Looking for the reverse button on a necchi bu nova

There is no reverse button, it is a lever. The stitch length lever also reverses the feed dogs - when down, it runs forward - at zero, it does not feed at all and when moved up, it reverses the machine. Set your stitch length by loosening the thumbscrew on the vertically moving lever and sliding the plate into position while moving the lever up to the desired mark. Tighten the screw and move the lever down to sew - to reverse just move the lever up until it hits the stop to sew the same stitch length in reverse.

How do I reverse stitch on a singer 362 fashion mate model

The large knob in the center of the stitch length dial is a button, push it in to reverse stitch. Hold in as long as you need to reverse stitch, then release to resume regular stitching.

Reverse stitching on a singer 514, HELP!

In the center of the stitch length knob (at the right side of the machine) is a button. You would push that button in to get the machine to reverse.

Machine sews only in reverse

Be sure you are in the correct stitch pattern...if you are on a buttonhole stitch or a stretch stitch it normal for the machine to sew backwards. Be sure your length is to the right of 0 and not in a strtch stitch model or buttonhole mode.
