Built in flash dosen't pop up

I receive error message 5 when I depress the shutter. I cannot use the camera unless I attach my EX 430 Flash.

Unfortunately, the first solution has not helped. I have used a Quantaray lens with my XT in the past 30 days; however, my most recent activity was solely with Canon's EF-S 18-55mm Lens.

Accidental bending of the pins ,at bottom of flash chamber ,can cause also trouble , it seems you have been using a speedlite a lot than the little tab under the shutter release side of the hot shoe can get bent down thus constantly pressing down ( toward the bottom of the camera )the small button which deactivates the pop- up flash even when the speedlite is not attached>Just bend the tab you a little with a jewelers screwdriver ,turn the camera off and on and then it fixed .The tabs needs to be bent up to release the flash deactivation switch try this also dip a Q-tip alcohol and clean the sliding parts of the flash ,this might clean away from gunk made stick.. ..

Err 05 is when the internal flash is obstructed or the camera doesn't
get an reply that the flash open successfully.

    Try this :
What I have found is this. With your left hand, get ready to press the
flash request button near the left side of the lens. With your right
hand, use your thumb and one finger to prepare to pry up the flash
head, perhaps using fingernails. Now push the button and pry. With that
help, it should pop up. Try it a few times for exercise, and then it
should pop up on its own quite easily. If you don't exercise it for
another month, then it may stick again. If the camera is already
displaying Err 05, then it will not do anything for you until you
switch off, then switch back on again.

    That should be covered in
warranty if its an faulty "pop up flash." Call Canon at 1-800-OK

5 error is a mirror return error.

The reason or this error message is that the mirror not is returning after a shot. To normalize the camera, a second press on the trigger button is necessary. 4. Note that all functions operate perfect, and the mirror slides smooth in its trace.

The 5 error often happens when using 3rd party lenses (Sigma, Tamron, etc.) which cause incompatibility problems. Were you using a non-Canon lens?

Also clean all contacts with a pencil eraser. Do this with your battery contacts as well and try fresh batteries.

Pop up flash Pops up but does not flash

Sounds like the internal flash is broken. I have seen used cameras advertised with this condition so it is not uncommon.

CANON 40D. Had Flash Error code 05. Powered down for 12 hours. Camera now gives message "Busy" when shutter trigger button depressed. Flash works manually and antennae pops-up , Flashes works manually....

Pop up flash locking mechanism needs adjustment or to be replaced . You might be able to do this yourself but the top cover has to come off completely ( the mechanism I am talking about is on the inside of the top cover and is not expensive ).
One reason for sending it in is that if the mechanism ( small electro magnet and the lock ) has to be replaced you will need spare parts and these are not freely available.

I have a canon EOS 400D and when i turn it on it works fine but when i start to use the flash it doesn't flash i get on the screen ERROR 99 ! what do i do ?

ERR99 means the camera is not communicating with the lens - probably just dirty contacts.

To isolate the cause of the issue, do the following: -
1. Turn off the camera.
2. Remove the lens, battery, and CF card.
3. Allow the camera to sit without power for approximately 20 minutes.
4. Insert only a fully charged battery, and turn on the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

Does the “ERR 99" message appear? If so, the camera may be faulty and requires a service. If it does not, then: -
1. Turn off the camera.
2. Insert the CF card.
3. Turn on the camera.
4. Format the CF card in the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

Does the “ERR 99" message appear? If so, then the CF card is faulty. Try a different card. If the message does not appear: -
1. Turn off the camera.
2. Clean the gold contacts on the lens by GENTLY rubbing them with a pencil eraser or soft cloth. Keeping the camera face pointing down, also clean the gold contacts on the camera, being careful that you do not let any debris fall into the camera body.
3. Reattach your lens.
4. Turn on the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

If the “ERR 99" message only appears when one particular lens is attached, then that lens should be examined by a service technician.
If you see the “ERR 99" with a different Canon lens attached, then the camera is faulty and should be serviced.
