Question about Computers & Internet
I installed a usb external hard drive (from dead pc) to copy files from it.It shows up as a disk drive, but can't open it. I haven't used the install disk from Mad Dog because I don't want to erase the existing files. How can I copy these?
Both systems are XP, loose drive is SATA and I don't have access to another machine set up for SATA to try it on. That's why I tried the enclosure (which is SATA or IDE and works with another IDE drive).
The dead PC is Dell Dimension 8400 & won't boot from onboard drive or Dell disk, tells me "missing or corrupt Windows\system32\config\system file". I was just trying to figure if the drive was bad or what.

1) what are the operating systems on the old (dead) and target systems?
2) Try it on a second working system?
3) This sounds like an OS related problem (if it's not a dead hard drive problem). If you're running Windows, the newsgroups/forums run by Microsoft are actually pretty good. E.g. if you're using WinXP, try
They can give you help in diagnosing the problem.
