External hard drive

I installed a usb external hard drive (from dead pc) to copy files from it.It shows up as a disk drive, but can't open it. I haven't used the install disk from Mad Dog because I don't want to erase the existing files. How can I copy these?

Both systems are XP, loose drive is SATA and I don't have access to another machine set up for SATA to try it on. That's why I tried the enclosure (which is SATA or IDE and works with another IDE drive).
The dead PC is Dell Dimension 8400 & won't boot from onboard drive or Dell disk, tells me "missing or corrupt Windows\system32\config\system file". I was just trying to figure if the drive was bad or what.

1) what are the operating systems on the old (dead) and target systems?

2) Try it on a second working system?

3) This sounds like an OS related problem (if it's not a dead hard drive problem). If you're running Windows, the newsgroups/forums run by Microsoft are actually pretty good. E.g. if you're using WinXP, try
microsoft.public.windowsxp.basics or
microsoft.public.windowsxp.hardware
They can give you help in diagnosing the problem.

How to download a cd from a portable device into mac

Do you mean "how to burn files from a portable device to the mac" instead? You will need burning software like Nero or other software that is compatible with your mac. The process includes copying the files from the portable device to your mac hard drive then use burning software to burn the files to a dvd or cd disk. I don't know about mac but with a pc, you simple drag and drop the files from the portable device to your hard drive using Windows Explorer.

My current drive is dead. How can I install this external drive???

On most computer systems you can simply plug the hard drive in and it will automatically pop up with a notification that the computer is installing the drive for you. it should tell you when it has finished installing the drive and when the drive is ready to use. Usually this wont take longer then 3 mins or so.
If not, then the drive should of came with a cd of some sort with the information to install the drive on it. Pop in the disc and read the info that comes up on the computer for specific instructions to install that disk

Not working. windows could not load installer for wpd. what is wpd)

Here is what you need to do.

Explore your drive C: (usual drive where windows operating system is installed)
Open your Windows Folder and look for the files SFCFILES.***

If you see filename SFCFILES.OLD, replace its extension with DLL (like SFCFILES.DLL)

If you don't see this file, you can copy thi file on the directory of ....\I386 on your windows cd installer.
This file when copied in the cd installer has .DL_ extension. Just replace it with .DLL extension and copy this file on C:\windows\system32 directory.

Try this and let me know.

No dear. External Hard disks, pendrives etc does it for you. A CD/DVDRW plays only CDs & DVDs + burns CDs & DVDs. Please send me your feedback & vote to motivate us & to help us help you.

One or more of the hints below will probably sort out most USB problems with most USB portable / external hard drives.

1. Ensure it is connected directly to the computer to a USB 2.0 port not a USB 1.0 port as this can have effects on performance and reliability

2. Use only the cables that came with it NOT one that fits that may have been lying around.

3. Do not connect through an external USB HUB unless that hub is USB 2.0 AND has its own power supply.

4. Use ONLY the power supply that came with it if it has an external power supply Don’t use any other unless you know it has both the same voltage and current rating e.g. 12V 500mA anything rated below that would not work properly.

5. Always use the same port for connecting your devices. Some devices do not like being switched about. If switched they may want to install software / drivers again. This can be especially true if you move a HUB to another port

6. For FLASH DRIVES you should ensure that the device is set for "quick removal" using the drive control panel properties or use the USB "Safely Remove Hardware" option. If you dont do this there is a very strong chance that any files you transfer may not be there when you plug into another computer.

7. If none of the above steps help look at updating the drivers from the manufacturers web site in the support section.

8. If you checked and fixed anything there and still have issues then check your hardware from CONTROL PANEL / SYSTEM / HARDWARE.
Any exclamation marks by hardware need fixing before you investigate any further

9. ensure that you have set removable drives for "quick removal" or that you use the "Safly Remove Hardware" option often shown on the lower toolbar. It is possible that files my not be fully written to external devices before they are removed. This corrupts the file itself and even on occasion the drive.

SPECIAL NOTES
USB hard drives should be treated with extreme care.
This is a real hard drive ! and knocks and bumps can quite literally kill them.

Hope this gives you the information you need

Disk drive does not recognize or read a disk

you could try removing the drivers from your device manager by going through contol panel or by right-clicking on My Computer and then on the hardware tab. you would find it under cd/dvd rom drives.Just right click and click on uninstall. Then if you dont have your driver disk you might be able to download it from softpedia.com. If you have installed drivers more than once you might be able to roll-back drivers but the best bet would be to just uninstall and re-install the drivers.

Hope this helps

Mad Dog USB DVD-RW not recognized

The firmware updates and drivers won't help you. You can try turning it off, disconnecting it from your PC, then turning off your PC, turning on the burner and then turning your PC back on and hope that it's recognized. The chances are slim as this is a known issue with Mad Dog external USB DVDRW's and you need to send it in for repair if it's under warranty or put it on eBay as broken (or throw it out) otherwise and get a new one. I have a Mad Dog external DVD-RW and ran into the same exact issue, for a while it was working on and off as long as I didn't turn the burner off while my PC was on but for a while now it's just recognized by the PC as mass storage device rather than the DVDRW that it is and when you reach that point the aforementioned two choices (repair or throwing it out\putting it on ebay) are the only ones you have.
