I have an HP Pavilion a635w. i think i did something to ther mother board. i turned off the pc, unplugged the pc and pulled the ram and installed more, when i turned on the pc it just beeps. i turned it off pulled out the new ram & put back the old. Same thing. I pulled all the ram and turned it on, same thing. so i am thinking that i damaged the motherboard. what should i be looking for to determine this? can you tell me what motherboard to purchase so i can get this puppy up and running.
I found this replacement motherboard with a simple google search: http://www.google.com/products?hl=en&safe=off&q=HP+Pavilion+a635w+motherboard&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=X&oi=product_result_group&resnum=1&ct=title

yes you can! compatible motherboards are cheap and easy to find for the socket 754 design compatible with your cpu. with prices going from anywhere from ~$50-$80. great places to shop include frys electronics, newegg.com, amazon.com and tigerdirect.com. when something like this happens to you its always a good idea to consider upgrading your computer as well you can find cpu motherboard deals anywhere from $100 to $200 with a huge boost in computing power. if you choose to go this route make sure your ram will work on the motherboard you are considering. goodluck
Well if you want to keep your processor than you'll want to search for a motherboard with the same Socket type. You'll need to know exactly what kind of processor you have. If you have the box you can find out that way. Assuming you put it together your yourself. Or if you really have no clue. You can remove the heatsink off the CPU. And the socket label will be written right under that. (examples could be.. socket A.. socket 378.. Socket 754).
Once you find that. You can find a motherboard with that type and just ensure that it supports your processor and you'll be good to go.
Hi HotOlds, you did not hurt the motherboard. You did not install the memory correctly. Take the old memory & look at the contacts on the DIMM. There is a notch there & a notch in the memory slot. These two notches must be matched up when inserted. Each memory slot has a locking tab at each end of the slot. When you insert the memory correctly the locking tabs snap closed ensuring the memory will not come out. The beeps you are hearing are telling you the memory is not seated correctly. Same for the memory you bought. However, the memory you did buy must match the memory for the Pavilion A635W. This link will show memory you can use for the Pavilion A635W motherboard. http://www.google.com/products?hl=en&q=HP+Pavilion+A635W+memory&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=X&oi=product_result_group&resnum=1&ct=title (Buying a new board). The link you have posted for the ECS Gf6100-M754 MB. Will not take the memory you currently have. You will have to buy DDR3 memory but that is not the main issue. If you intend to put this motherboard into the Pavilion case it may not fit. Measure the board in the HP & check the dimensions of the ECS board you want to buy. You will have to buy a new CPU as well. The HP uses an AMD CPU & the ECS uses an Intel CPU. Basically you will be buying a whole new system including the CPU & memory, which may not fit in the HP case. You will also need a higher power supply to run the ECS board. HP's power supplies are much smaller.
I will not be online here at fixya for the next week or so.
You can just replace your video card. If your using the Hp A635w with the intergrated video it may have just died. You sill have a free AGP slot on the board. Buy a AGP card with DDR2 or DDR3, change the bios setting to boot to the AGP card first & Bingo! Your up & running. The HP A635w is a Micro-ATX form factor: 9.6 inches x 9.6 inches. Thats the board size & that is what you'll need to fit that HP case. Micro-ATX's limit you CPU type & speed. Like dual core's.
I've listed one board combo doing a quick search & this board will take your current memory & fit the HP case. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3594506&body=MAIN#detailspecs
As I mentioned you can go for the AGP card listed in this link. Six pages of AGP's. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_slc.asp?CatId=318&
It's up too you pick your flavor. Enjoy!
