    HelloLumpy816

I am trying to remove the agitator from my washing machine - Moffat Model

No.MW600L. - at least 15years old. Clothes gets tangled between agitator and the drum.

I have removed a plastic cap on the top of the agitator. I see a round metal shaft with teeth circling on the inside - no nuts or bolts. Is a special tool needed to unscrew the shaft ?

I have tried to pull it up but in vain.

    Thanking you in anticipation.

    William

Depending on the brand and the model, they vary. But for the most part, you will either have a fabric softner dispenser on top of your agitator or just a cosmetic cover. After popping or prying this off, there will usually be a bolt underneath that. Removing the bolt will let you slide the whole agitator off. If this doesn't work for you, replay back to me with the make and model# or your machine and I will try for more model specific instructions.

Washer does everything but agitate

Very easy fix. The agitator cogs are worn out and or broken. The repair kit PS334650. Just pop the top off the agitator, remove the dust cover inside, and then remove the agitator cogs. It takes a 11mm socket and ratchet and a few extensions to reach. It's about a $15 part, and takes about 10 minutes to fix.

I have a Kenmore 110. (full number is 110-82984810) It has a "ratchet/screw" type agitator. The big fins on the bottom part agitate back and forth, but the center piece no longer moves in a...

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:

    http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/part-model/Kenmore-Parts/Washer-Parts/Model-11082984810/0582/0153200?pathTaken=

and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

If the bottom agitates and not the top, the problem is likely the 4 "agitator dogs" designed to allow the top agitator to turn only one way.

Look at the section on the Sears site for Agitator, basket and tub.

See the part "Dog, agitator "

Remove the fabric softener unit, lift the top agitator cap (use a screwdriver) and you should see a plastic part in the center of the top agitator with a 1/2" square drive.

Remove the drive and lift off the top agitator. Turning it over you should see the 4 "dogs", replace these and the top agitator should turn in one direction only.

Replace the 1/2" drive, the cap and fabric softener unit and the top agitator should work.

Also see the following illustrated description of the above.

Top part of agitator appears to becoming disconnected from bottom part. bottom is attached to motor and is working.

Hello Friend, Your problem is easily solved. You need to replace the agitator dogs. To replace all you have to do is pop the top cover off of agitator and remove bolt. Pull up on agitator and remove from washer. Next remove upper agitator from lower agitator. Inside the upper agitator top piece you will see a mechanism that has 4 little ratcheting teeth, these are called agitator dogs. Just replace them with new ones and re-install agitator. This should solve your problem. Happy to help, Tim.

Making an awful ratcheting noise during aggitation and spin cycles

Under the agitator there is a rachet mechanism that works the agitator. If it is stripped, it will skip until the next good tooth.. when it fails entirely the agitater will stop going back and forth. Its nylon and age along with overloading hastens its dearg.. If you can get the parts you can replace it yourself without difficulty. There is a single bolt in the center of the agitator top . Remove and loft agiyator straight up.

These are called agitator ratchet's and are located beneath the plastic retainer cover which is held in place by a 3/8" bolt. Remove bolt from agitator and remove. You may need to use a flat screwdriver to depress 3 glued tabs within this plastic retainer. From top use hammer lightly tap with screw driver until all 3 are free. Turn agitator over ratchet's are accessible. Order agitator ratchets. Thank you

    Agitator does minimal agitation

    Hi Omni,
The Agitator "dogs"/cams have given up the ghost and need to be replaced. Access to them is easy. Before starting the repair, have this part in hand.

    Here's a tool list;
1.) small flat screwdriver (to remove the top part of the agitator)
    2.) 3/8" ratchet
    3.) 8" X 3/8" extension (for the ratchet)
    4.) 7/16" socket

Take a gander at this pic... you'll be going after #10 'cause that's the problem.
    38834c8.jpg

All you gotta do is remove the top parts from the agitator to access it. See #2 in the diagram? That's the bolt holding the agitator to the transmission shaft. Remove that, then lift the whole agitator out of the tub. Now place the agitator on the floor and put both of your feet on the base. Now lift the agitator (#3) off the base (#4). Place one of your hands into the opening of the top of the agitator (to hold the cam (#9) in place) then turn the agitator over. The cam will slide right out.

Now you'll see the cam "dogs"... little white curved plastic doo-hickeys. All you gotta do now is install the new cam assy. and rebuild the agitator! Cool, huh? All it takes is about $15 bucks in parts and ~20 minutes.

Let me know if you have further questions. And don't forget to rate my solution as "FixYa"! Thanks, BB

    Top of agitator not agitating

    Hello,

This is a problem with the parts that we called dog agitator. They are 4 pcs plastic parts that function as a lock on a ratchet handle drive.

the top agitator would turn one way and these dog agitators prevents it from going the other way.

To replace it, you have to remove the top softener dispenser, remove another plastic cover that covers the bolt from water. remove the bolt and you can pull the whole agitator out of the tub.
Be careful on dismantling, it is tricky to put it back. Remember where every part goes.

    Tnx for using Fixya,
