What is the fastest compatible CPU for upgrade Asus X50GL series laptop

changing chips most time requires a mother board up date to cater for the extra chip pins
best advice here is to take it to a computer repair shop and they will be able to tell you right off if what you want to do is possible with that board
point of interest here
chips are only as fast as the hard drive and rams will work
if your unit has a disc type hard drive consider upgrading that to a solid state hard drive which handles data much much faster than a disc type

drbrightirem.jpgOverclocking a processor means enabling it to operate above the manufacturer's specified frequency. Many internet sites provide instructions for overclocking. Processor manufacturers and many computer experts believe the slight gain in performance (only perceivable on CPU-intensive software) isn't worth the expense or considerable risk.

  • Get whatever tools you need: screwdriver, needle-nose pliers, motherboard manual, cooling hardware, etc.
  • 2 Find out whether your motherboard can be adjusted in the BIOS setup, with jumpers or not at all.
  • 3 Find out clock-speed limitations of the motherboard.
  • 4 Run all Windows and any third-party diagnostic applications you have. Fix all system problems.
  • 5 Make a complete backup of your system, documents and applications you don't have on CD-ROM. Do not overwrite these copies.
  • 6 If you have a BIOS-adjustable motherboard, make changes according to your motherboard manual, and skip to Step 15.
  • 7 Shut down computer.
  • 8 Leave computer plugged in to surge suppressor.
  • 9 Disconnect all peripherals from computer.
  • 10 Remove cover of chassis.
  • 11 Ground yourself to computer with any professional grounding equipment you have. Otherwise, ground yourself by touching a metal part of the chassis.
  • 12 If your motherboard has adjustable jumpers, locate the jumpers that control the CPU speed.
  • 13 Use needle-nose pliers to change jumper settings. Move jumpers to positions indicated in your motherboard manual for the clock speed you want. Check the internet for recommendations.
  • 14 Install a CPU heat sink, heat-sink compound, and a specialty cooling fan, if appropriate and possible.
  • 15 Put system back together, and reboot.
  • 16 If computer does not boot, and CPU still works, try lowering the clock speed. If that doesn't work, restore the original configuration.
  • 17 Check all functions, and run a CPU-intensive program.

    • CPUs have rated and maximum speeds. Exceeding the maximum speed is far more likely to cause problems than more conservative adjustments.

    • Overclocking an Intel processor explicitly voids its warranty. Other manufacturers have similar exclusions. Intel prevents overclocking of some CPUs by disabling higher multiplier settings.

    • Expect a shorter life for an overclocked processor, including the possibility of its immediate failure.

    • Prepare to deal with seemingly unrelated problems that can be caused by overclocking: destruction of other internal components, lost data, system and application crashes, and an inability to boot the system. Such problems can occur randomly or materialize well after you have altered your motherboard

    Is there any way to overclock the cpu on an HM55 based Laptop?

    No. Overclocking a laptop is out of the question and it will make the chip run crazy hot. It could be done if you cut away some of the case. But overclocking makes only a tiny difference in performance you will see way bigger gains from switching to and SSD drive.

    Cpu upgrade

    (Last time I looked, this was the world's largest product support website, and there ARE technicians from AROUND the world; on here!!!!!!!! Do we count as an 'IT techie'? ........Lol!)

    In all three of your posts, not once has the laptop manufacturer name, and model number been stated.

    Processor (CPU) support depends on;

    A) What processor socket is on the motherboard?

    B) What motherboard chipset does the motherboard use?

    C) What is the processor that is installed now?

    With these parameters known, THEN you can think about CPU (Processor) upgrade.

    1) CPU (Processor) has to FIT, the processor socket being used.
    THIS, is also IF the motherboard HAS a processor socket; and is NOT soldered directly to the motherboard.

    2) The motherboard chipset supports the Processor (CPU)
    It has to be known if the motherboard chipset will support, the CPU (Processor) that you want to upgrade to.

    For older computers the motherboard chipset consists of;
    A) Northbridge chip
    2) Southbridge chip

    With this technology the Northbridge chip, of the motherboard chipset; is what determines Processor (CPU) support.
    Newer technology, such as used per se by the Intel Core i processors, does NOT use a Northbridge chip.

    3) Looking at the existing Processor now, you can determine;

    A) Voltage Range: What voltage range does the exisiting Processor use now?
    Does the upgrade Processor also fall within this Voltage Range?

    B) Core technology, and architecture:
    Existing Processor uses the Conroe Core technology, and the 90nm architecture. (NanoMeter)
    Does the upgrade Processor also use the same Core technology, and architecture?

    If not is there a BIOS upgrade available?
    (The motherboard chipset also comes into play again, here)

    Enough of this generic prattle.........
    Post the laptop manufacturer name, and model number.
    Then I, or someone else can give you the facts; and not generic information.

    M115 s1061 overclock

    Overclock can be done by setting fsb higher by percentage to speed up cpu frequency by percentage. But some cpu can not be overclocked and may overheat and shut down. And some drams can not be changed to higher fsb.

    Installing sodimm 2x2gb ram for acer aspire 5504wxmi will not boot but each 2gb installed seperately will boot. Why wont the BIOS recognise 4gb even before the OS could boot? is there a fix?

    The motherboard chipset, and more specifically the Northbridge chip, will Not support 4GB of Ram memory.

    The Acer Aspire 5500 series of Notebook PC's, (Which the Aspire 5504wxmi Notebook PC is one of the series), uses an Intel 910GL motherboard chipset,

    The Intel 910GL motherboard chipset only supports 2GB of Ram Memory,

    The motherboard chipset technology used in your Acer Aspire 5504wxmi Notebook PC, consists of a Northbridge chip, and a Southbridge chip.

    [ Chip and Chipset are slang terms for I.C.
    Integrated Circuit,

    The Northbridge chip is an Intel 82910GL {Part Number}
    The Southbridge chip is an Intel 82801FB {Part Number} It is also referred to as ICH6.

    Scroll the above page down towards the bottom, until you come to the heading -
    Southbridge 9XX and 3/4 Series chipsets, for information on the Southbridge chip ]

    The Northbridge chip handles the faster capabilities of a computer.
    Processor, Ram Memory, and High-speed graphics.

    {AGP and PCI-Express graphics technology are High-speed graphics.
    A graphics card inserted into a PCI slot, or a graphics chipset using the PCI bus, is NOT high-speed graphics.
    Integrated Graphics is Not High-speed graphics }

    The Southbridge chip handles the slower capabilities of a computer.
    Anything connected to the PCI bus, Integrated Graphics, IDE bus, SATA bus, USB bus, Ethernet, and Audio,

    I invite you to reinstall the Ram Memory the Aspire worked with, go online, and download the tiny, free program - CPU-Z
    This tiny program will tell you exactly what motherboard chipset is on the Aspire's motherboard.

    This is information on CPU-Z, and shows you the GUI of CPU-Z,
    (Graphics User Interface),

    Click on the screenshot of CPU-Z on the upper right of the page. (Enlarges it)

    CPU stands for Central Processing Unit. Another term used is Microprocessor, or Processor for short.
    When you open CPU-Z it automatically opens to the CPU tab.

    If you click on the Mainboard tab, you will find out in-depth information on your motherboard.
    (Mainboard is proper speak for Motherboard)

    CPU-Z homepage,

    CPU-Z download page for newest version,

    Need help in downloading, and installing CPU-Z, post in a Comment.
    Also what the tabs are, and how to understand what you are looking at.

    (If an online entity suggested an Acer Aspire 5504wxmi will support 4GB of Ram Memory, they are wrong.
    Find out what exact motherboard chipset is on the motherboard. This will support my statement )

    Referring to a Toshiba Satellite Pro L300 series of Notebook PC:

    According to the Service Manual;

    1) The Maximum Total Amount of Ram Memory depends on the Northbridge chipset used.
    (System Controller. Intel)

    If it is an Intel GM965 chipset, the maximum total amount is 4GigaByte. (4GB)
    If it is an Intel GL960 chipset, the maximum total amount is 2GB.

    Northbridge chipset (Or System Controller)

    The Northbridge chipset was aptly named so, because of the general location of the chipset on the motherboard.
    It is generally located under the Processor.

    (The Southbridge chipset is located further 'South' on the motherboard)

    The Northbridge chipset handles the faster capabilities of the computer.
    It handles the Processor, Ram Memory, and High-Speed graphics.

    High-speed graphics being AGP or PCI-Express.
    Integrated Graphics, or a graphics card installed into a PCI slot is NOT high-speed graphics.

    This is handled by the Southbridge chipset.
    The Southbridge chipset handles the slower capabilities of the computer.

    Motherboard diagram;

    Information on the Northbridge (computing),

    Information on the Intel GM965, and GL960 chipset,

    Look under the heading Chipset at GL960.
    Looking across you can see that the chipset supports;

    1) DDR2 Sdram that is either 533MegaHertz, or 677MHz. (SO-DIMM ram memory for laptops)
    2) Supports up to 3GB

    [ Your laptop has TWO ram memory slots. The primary, or Main ram memory slot, (Outside edge), and the Optional ram memory slot, (Inside towards the middle)

    There are No 1.5GB ram memory modules. ('Stick')
    This is why 2GB is the maximum with the Intel GL960 chipset.

    Install one 2GB ram memory module in the Main ram memory compartment,
    Install one 1GB ram memory module, in the main ram memory compartment, and one 1GB ram memory module in the Optional ram memory compartment ]

    Now look under the Chipset heading at GM965.
    1) Supports DDR2 Sdram at either 533MHz, or 677MHz.
    2) Supports up to 4GB.

    How to know what Northbridge (System Controller) chipset your laptop uses?
    Use CPU-Z from

    Information on CPU-Z on Wikipedia,

    If you need guidance in downloading, installing, and using CPU-Z, hit me up in a Comment.

    Download page for the free Service Manual, for the Toshiba Satellite Pro L300 series of Notebook PC's,

    Scroll down with your eyes to the heading - Satellite Pro
    Go across, and click on - L300

    This is a PDF file. The computer you are using now has Adobe Reader on it, which uses PDF files.
    After you click on - L300 - it may take up to 30 seconds before you will see the first page come up.
    It may also take additional time for the file to fully download.
