The pilot lights go out on their own after awhile on both ovens of an Imperial IR-8. The owner thinks the unit was converted to Natural Gas when he purchased it but the labels on the unit read LP Gas and the regulators specify G-LP on their bodies. Would operating the oven on natural gas with a LP configuration explain the pilot lights extinguishing after a period of time with the oven burning? If so, is an appropriate solution simply to install a natural gas conversion kit?

I would really like a response directed specifically to the Imperial IR-8 double oven and range. I suspect the individual who sold the unit to the current owner did a partial conversion given that everything other than the pilots appears to work alright. Never the less because I can see G-LP on the body of the regulators I am uncomfortable with the situation from a safety perspective and am inclined to do a complete Imperial packaged conversion simply to insure all bases are covered. Nevertheless, I appreciate the input from the previous expert

    Here are the specifics Rick~
The unit is an Impirial IR-8, circa 1997, S/N 05370206, LPG, Man. Pressure 10.0 W.C. and eventhough the seller tells the owner it was converted to Natural Gas, I am unconvinced. I also know that the Manifold Pressure for a Natural Gas application should be 5.0 W.C. Am I correct in assuming that you would recommend a complete factory authorized conversion as opposed to any half measures based on a sellers claims? Apparently the seller has told the owner that only four screws need to be adjusted. I am, again, unconvinced but I am bucking the owners adversion to spending money.

That will work Rick, Thank You Big-Time. I know the dude that sold that oven pulled a fast one on the owner and now he trying to dodge taking responsibility for putting it in proper order. The Imperial identification plate doesn?t have a model number beyond IR-8 and the year 1997. Every ID plate I?ve ever seen with a serial number on it had everything concerning the make and model at the same place. I appreciate the backup on this problem because the owner was skeptical that the seller had done him wrong. Since ya?al backed up what I was essentially saying he is seeing the writing on the wall. And, he will now spring for the cost of buying the conversion kit and won?t have to keep relighting his pilots (or rebuilding a burned up restaurant). I?ll drop you an update as the situation develops. Cadabrador AKA David

Thanks for the feedback. The flames look great just as you described; however, I am also sure the pilots were not changed out and when the main burners kick in the pressure available to the pilots drops thereby causing them to extinguish. Thanks again. The info ya'al supplied gives me the back up I needed to urge the buyer to slam the seller for misrepresenting the extent of the conversion he claimed was done.

Yes this would definetly cause the pilots to go out and you should refer to your manual on changing between natural and lp gas on some units not only do you have to turn the gas regualtor and flip the small set screw to the oppisite side but most also require you to change the orifices of each burner if not then the stove will not light Ive gone through a similar situation with a viking best thing to do would be to get ahold of marcone appliance parts and have your model number as well as make of the machine handy and find out the prive of a gas-lp conversion kit. Please message me back if you have any further questions and please remember to rank how this opinion has helped in your appliance situation Thanks again

without the model number it wont give me the kit number i punched in the serial many times keeps asking for model number you can call imperial toll free at 1800 343 7790 and ask to speak to one of there techs and they will also be able to look up your serial number to cross referance your conversion kit. I 've had the fun job of converting a wolf range before as well as many vikings hi end ranges never require change 4 bolts its alot more work then that so call imperial and they will give you full list of everything that has to be replace hope this helps bro. If you have any further questions message me back or if you find the model number and would like me to find the part for you Thanks again.

I would like to know about the flame charecteristics of your oven burners,If they are nice pointed blue flame with just a small amount of yellow then they are probably ok. If the main burners did not have the proper sized orifices they would have almost no flame at all. L.P. runs at a much higher pressure than nat. gas so it has much smaller orifices.
It's possible that the orifices on the pilots were not changed.
I think if it was me I would have a trained tech. check your oven and make sure gas pressures are where they should be. I hope this is of some help to you. Thanks

Convert lp natural gas

To convert a lincoln LP gas oven to a natural gas, you actually first of all need to buy from the supplier an orifice ment for natural gas and change. The difference in the orifices could be in the size of orifice aperture.
The orifice i'm talking about is located in the burner assembly. you got to dis assemble the burner so as to get to it.
After that you need to adjust the main gas manifold when the oven is on. The adjustment must be done such that the pilot flame is not yellowish

What causes the flame switch to cut out ion an Imperial ICVD convection oven

This flame sensor switch is a safety device that only allows the main valve to open after is is satisfied there is a pilot flame. Otherwise if there were no pilot and the main valve was allowed to open, the inside of the burner area would quickly fill with gas and pose an exposion hazard. The original capillary tube type switch is obsolete and a new electronic unit conversion kit is available. Contact Imperial tech support for more information

Convert to lp gas

Hello,
You will need the owner's manual to follow their LP conversion instructions. You will need the make, model and serial # in order to buy the LP conversion kit (if needed) from a local appliance parts store or from the store where you bought the appliance. Typically, you will be either adjusting (turning down) or exchanging the main burner orifice(s), as well as adjusting the air shutter on the burner venturi tube, as needed for a bluer flame. The appliance regulator will need to be converted, which is usually done by flipping the cap. If you don't have your owner's manual, leave another comment for me with the model # and I'll see if I can find it online for you. I have not worked on this particular type of oven in my neck of the woods, but ovens are all pretty similar in design. Some also have a thermostat that needs to be converted by turning the Nat to LP selector behind the temp dial. Hope that helps. Douglas

How do i change from lp gas to natural gas on wall oven

First thing you will need to do is find out from the manufacturer of the oven if there is a conversion kit available and if the appliance is convertable. If there is then you can order the kit and follow the installation instructions. Also check the back of the oven for an envelope that may contain the gas orfice replacement heads to convert the appliance to natural gas. If you find the replacement orfice then you will need to remove the lp orfice from the burner and install the natural one. Then the appliance gas regulator will need to have the pressure adjusted lower for natural gas. There is usually a removable cap on top of the regulator on the oven. When you remove this cap there is usually a small metal ring that you can remove and flip over. It will say "nat" on one side and "lp" on the other. You will need to turn this ring over and re-insert so it displays "nat". This will change the gas pressure from 13 inches W.C. to 4 inches W.C. Some appliances only require the orfice change and no regulator adjustment but make sure that is the case with your oven because if you feed 13 inches W.C. pressure to a burner with a natural gas orfice...YOU WILL GET A HUGE BURNER FLAME AND MAY BURN/FLASH YOURSELF...So use extreme caution when converting a gas appliance. And if the oven has a pilot you will need to adjust the pilot pressure or change it's orfice if it has one. If it is electronic ignition no adjustment to that will be needed. Also unplug the electrical power the the unit while working on it.
