Question about Creative Labs ZEN Vision:M Digital Media Player

22 Answers

Not recognised by pc but charges...

This is my creative vision:m 60gb (DVP-HD0004)

It goes straight into recovery mode after firmware problem image. It cleans up and formats... so it reads the hd. But when I plug it to pc it is not recognised, it does not come up as a mtp device at all. I have WMP:10 and a Acer Laptop. Tried the regedit trick... but so far nothing. Any ideas?

Nope not recognised... but it charges. So I dont know what is possible to do...

  • Andre Pinho Jun 25, 2008

To make this even more clearer when I plug and unplug the device it does not make usual usb sounds of a removable disk or a ipod or a phone.
And in the device manager nothing pops-up, question mark in any devices including usb... they remain as USB root hub.

  • Andre Pinho Jun 25, 2008

Updating the firmware is What I want!! but this cannot be done unless device is recognised by computer.

Is there any way of "installing the firmware onto the hard-drive" without having to go through recovery mode? I can open the mp3 player and connect the hd through a zif to usb connector and it works...

  • Andre Pinho Jun 25, 2008

Nothing I can do... new motherboard?
What about that firmware update directly through the hard drive?

  • Andre Pinho Jun 25, 2008

The same cable and usb port work fine with another zen vision:m but this one is the 30gb version... so drivers, cable and usb por is fine...

  • Andre Pinho Jun 26, 2008

nope... so far.. still no go. I really reckon its a motherboard fault... I can either replace the motherboard... or fix the motherboard if someone tells me how... or my other crazy idea that might work which is if someone tells me how to install the firmware straight into a hard drive without having to go through connecting the zen vision to pc!

  • Andre Pinho Jun 26, 2008

I have tried it on another computer same result... when I previously mentioned a new motherboard I meant for the Creative not for my laptop...

  • Andre Pinho Jun 26, 2008

    I access the recovery menu:

    -scandisk

    -format all

    -firmware update

    -reboot

Note all work except firmware update as I cannot connect it to pc because it is not recognised.

  • Andre Pinho Jun 26, 2008

I have got the newest firmware file:

Try this one first to make your PC recognize the zen:

Some folks have had good luck resolving USB device recognition issues like
you have by deleting the INFCACHE.1 file, which can get corrupted with bad
data and cause issues like you have. The file is located at C:\Windows\inf.
There, scroll down to the INFCACHE.1 file and right click it and select
delete. To do this, you will likely have to give yourself permission to
delete it, because of Windows built-in Security. Just right click the file,
select Properties and then click on the security tab.

Hope that helps........

    Dear Sir,

To reset the player: gently insert thin object (like a straightened paperclip) into the Reset hole located on the side of the unit, and remove the paper clip. Remove the paper clip.

The PMC should reboot at this point. If the player continues to not respond, connect the PMC to your PC and format the unit.

To format a Zen Portable Media Center:

    1. Connect the player to your PC
    2. Open Windows Media Player 10.
    3. Click on the File button, CDs and Devices, and then click on Synchronize.
    4. Select the Zen Portable Media Player in the Device pane (if you have multiple devices connected), and click on the Format storage media button

    1. Make sure that battery is charged.
    2. Detach your player from your PC, and ensure that it is turned off.
    3. Remove the battery.
    4. Move and hold the Power button to the Power On position and re-insert the battery to the Zen Micro. Hold the Power button until the Recovery Mode appears.

You need to download it from Microsoft. It's a free update for any legit copy of Windows XP, and includes many security updates and enhancements to various parts of the system, including the part that deals with MP3 players that use PlaysForSure, like yours. You can get it here:

Go to your USB Devices in Device manager and uninstall your USB. Then let it identify them again. They could have gotten turned of from a power surge.

This player should still be under warranty correct? Then you will want to have it serviced under the warranty by the manufacturer.
If you have any other questions let me know.

Hi,
WIth so many suggestions and solutions that you have got ,Jsut try two things.
1, If any other USB device like a printer or mouse or keyboard, is working with your computer. The motherboard is OK . All you are experinceing is a driver conflict( as you told , you donnot hear the usual plug in and plug out sound )
2. Disconnect all USB devices from the computer
Click START> Right click my computer>left click properties>left click the hardware tab>left click device manager >left click + next to USB controllers> Right click on all USB root hubs and delete the same
3. Restart your computer, try pluging in the ZEN
4. STill no go
5. Its a little harsh to say , but windows neeeds to be completely reinstalled , so you need to back up all your information.

Thanks
Proton

PS : HAve you tried thsi player on a different machine ?

Keep the Zen player disconnected. Boot up and open WMP. Once WMP is open plug in your Zen player. It should be recognized in WMP as a drive location you can access using the Sync tool icon.

From what I've read, it is possible, I'm not saying this happened, but it is possible you have messed the Zen bios up in your attempts to flash it.

As has been pointed out, from everything that was offered by the actual experts here, not the wannabes who would have you disassemble the board etc., you simply may have a bad player. It does happen. Too bad it happened to you but to tell you what you already know, the Zen player ain't so good. Before you ruin your chance to return it for another one. Try connecting it while WMP is open and should that fail to Sync with the Sync tool call or email Creative and get an RMA to replace it.

This is not your motherboard friend. Have you tried all the USB ports on the PC, those in front and those in back?

BTW, in your comments back please make some reference to what you tried and didn't work.

Go to a PC your player works on and download the firmwae update and flash it from that PC. Make a backup of your firmware if its offered.

But, try the USB ports at the back of your PC first.

Try this:

Disconnect all USB devices, reboot into safe mode, open Device Manager, delete all USB Root HUBs, reboot in normal mode, let the hubs re-detect. Right-Click Each hub, click PROPERTIES, Click Power Management TAB, Uncheck the check box to let windows turn the hub off. reboot again

Connect the device, see if it is detected.

If it isn't, open DISK MANAGEMENT, and see if the drive is seen there, and if it had an drive letter conflicts.

If the player doesn't complete it's boot-up it won't connect to Windows. In the recovery menu there is a reload firmware option, did you try it?

Also just to make sure it's not your PC have you tried it on another computer? A friend's PC maybe?

You could also try re-installing WMP10 in case something happened to the mtp driver.

If you're suspecting that it's your board you may be able to find another Zen on eBay with a broken screen or hard drive that you can salvage the board from for cheap.

  • Dean Joly
    Dean Joly Jun 25, 2008

This may be drastic but it may work. How about unsoldering the battery from the board in order to completely cut power for a little while. This may reset anything that may be locked up. I know that the Zen doesn't turn itself completely off all the time as my song will keep playing for a while after I turn it off.

  • Dean Joly
    Dean Joly Jun 26, 2008

As I said yesterday, if you want to revive this Zen then I would try to find one that is being sold for parts on eBay. Make sure the one you buy has a good board, so find one with a busted screen or hard drive. You may even be able to buy just the board, but eBay is your best bet for parts like this. Good luck, and I think it's worth repairing as the Zen Vision:M is an awesome player, been using one for two years myself.

  • Dean Joly
    Dean Joly Jun 26, 2008

Definitely sound like the USB controller on the board or the firmware has taken a fit. I'm afraid that the only way I see of getting it going would be to replace the board.

Does not do what it is supposed to do after the FIRMWARE update was applied. Better contact the manufacturer since their product was working fine before their update was applied.
