Need to replace 11L tweeter

Hi,

I've blown the tweeter in my 11L. I have a new 11L tweeter but need to open up the 11L somehow. Can anyone post a picture, or just tell me how to open up the 11L?

I've taken off the grill, and used an allen key to remove the 4 bolts around the tweeter - but the tweeter does not budge at all.

Any ideas?

    Great! As I thought.

So what tool would you use to wedge out the woofer without damaging the lacquer coating and the rubber around the drivers?

    Is a knife too tough?

Should I deliver it to a service centre? Only unauthorized ones are available where I am (in Dubai). The cost of labour is approx $80.

The best solution I've found is this:
1. Remove all the tweeter screws.
2. Take a thing metal rod (a coat hanger should work) and lightly tap the tweeter through the top port in the rear until it is loosened and comes out. The tweeter is totally sealed so you probably won't damage it if you need to do this to a working tweeter.

This method also works for the woofer but you need to be very careful to tap the frame or magnet of the woofer and not the cone.

Your speaker is designed as a sealed system. This means that along with the screws to hold down the tweeter, there is a putty seal. This acts more like glue over time. You will need to carefully pry the tweet out of the hole. You may find it easier to pry off the woofer first, then reach inside the cabinet to push out the tweeter.

Keep us posted on your progress.

Have 2 jbl 615 get good base and sub but neither tweeter playing

You will need to determine if it's the amplifiers or the tweeter themselves that are not working. If you open up the cabinets and check each tweeter with an ohm meter for continuity it will show if the tweeters are working, in which case the amp is the problem. if the meter shows that the tweeters are blown, you should still hook up another tweeter or speaker to the horn amp to see if it's blown and therefor took out the tweeters.
If any of this sounds complicated, you'd be best off taking the cabinets to the repair shop.

My Bose l1 tweeter cuts out. any suggestions?

you are most likely turning it up too high so it cuts out to protect the speaker. Get bigger speakers.

How do i tell if my problem if the high freq diaphram or the cross over

The crossovers in professional speakers don't fail that easily. It could be a blown tweeter. To confirm remove the metal grille-- remove the screws of the Horn Tweeter -- remove the cable connectors on the tweeter terminals ( Red and Black wire ). Now if you have a multimeter put it in Ohms range and touch the probes on the tweeter terminals-- It should show a reading betwwen 4 to 8 Ohms depending what is written on the back of the tweeter magnet. If you do not have a Multimeter you can take an ordinary cell/battery ( 1.5v ) from a TV remote and touch the terminals of the Horn Tweeter with the battery. + to the tweeter + ( a small red dot or mark will be there on the tweeter ) and -- to the tweeter -- . When you touch the terminals or give 1.5 volt supply the tweeter will make a scratching noise.
If you do not hear the scratching noise - it indicates a blown tweeter coil and will need replacement.See link below for spares:-

But if it does, you are in trouble and will need professional help from a electronic technician.
Could be blown HF Amplifier, suspect the crossover last. They seldom fail.

Re: Quad 11L tweeter replacement

Given the relatively small cost of the repair, I'd have the servicer do it. That way if anything happens, he/she is respionsible for it. When I repair this type of speaker, I usually use an old chisel. It is sharp enough to get under the edge and strong enough to pry up the speaker. Just be careful not to nick the cabinet.

Tweeter not working on 15" EON G2

I have the same problem and the same conditions.
The tweeter is good, 3.8 ohms.
Some points of solding (donuts), have bad aspect.
I resolder the power transistors to the PCB and I solve the problem.

Tweeters????

Hi oddone

You may have a problem with either blown tweeters, or a faulty cross over, or both. If you have a multimeter, you can remove the tweeter, and check it DC resistance. They normally have their impedance marked on the back of the magnet. If not, you can assume they should measure 8 ohms. If they measure open circuit (high resistance), then they have failed.
A good speaker repair guy can often fix an open circuit tweeter as they often break where the very fine wires attach from the voice coil to the terminal. you can take a turn of the voice coil and reterminate to solve this problem. If the voice coils are burnt, they will need to be replaced.
If the tweeter meters ok, then you may have a problem with the crossover capacitors going dry. Generally they are 2.2uf to 6.8uf in value, the smallest cap in the crossover. If the plastic coating on them is split, or they look a different colour to the rest of the caps, replace them, if they sound "hollow" replace em, if you are not sure, replace em. other than that there is not alot more to look for with a speaker box tweeter Good luck and happy listening.

If you have any dramas, get back to me here and we can talk more about it.

Graeme

The tweeters are probably blown, i had the same problem.
You can test this by placing the cable on the dismanteled crossover at the back of the speaker. colour blue/yellow.
No high volume please.
See http://www.hometheatershack.com/forums/diy-speakers/4549-wharfedale-modus-one-six-crossover-pics.html
for pictures.
If the tweeter is blown it can be dismanteld with the aid of a screwdriver, horizontally.
Place it between the tweeterbowl and the ring which has the mark wharfedale on it. The tweeter comes loose. On second hand sites you can buy little speakers, like modus one or two's with the same tweeters for a good price and put them on your larger speakers.

This how i repaired 2 of my 4 modus eights.

good luck Danny Mol
