I have the same priblem - except botrh the heating and hot water lights are illuminated - bit the boiler is not on. I've removed the front part and it's evident that there has been some overheating on resistors - there are several scorch marks around the PC board. My friend who's a sparky make the comment - 'It's knackered'. I've moved the zone valves to manual - boiler straight away fires up!!

    Solution new timer unit!!

Okay couple questions here because either you have hot water baseboards or you have electric baseboard heaters.
- if the system is a hydronic baseboard heater fed form main boiler, usually this means your space heat is controlled by a zone valve which the zone valve is controlled by your thermostat.
-if you find the zone is controlled by a zone valve than it is possible the zone valve is defective causing hot water to bleed past the zone valve even though your t-stat is telling it to close.
- first find out what excatly the baseboard is heated by either water or electricity
-next personal message me and I can walk you through it

This does not sound like a thermostat problem. I would be looking for a zone valve or circulator pump problem.

I have an old Honeywell ST499A/ST699B thermostat. It still works OK but when we have a power cut I have to re-programme everything. Presumably this is because the battery needs replacing. I cannot find a way of opening the control box to get into the unit to replace the battery and in any case I’m not sure if the battery is renewable?
