Norton is famous for this kind of problem. You can call their tech support, or just get AVG Free, which is what I've used for years. http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/

SOURCE: I maintain the network at a local school that uses

This is a very bad idea from a security standpoint.
By poking a hole in your firewall you are going to allow a lot more than parents to access the student's data. Once you do that I know that I could access every single computer on the internal network. Trust me, I work in IT security.

I am sure if you tell the parents that accessing the reports will endanger their children they will re-evaluate there needs.

Find a dedicated IT security professional and work with them to find a safe way for parents to get this data. For example, an automated email list that will send reports to parents is a much safer solution. Another method is to utilize a DMZ.

I am sorry to be the one to say this it but if you are coming to FixYa.com for security solutions you are way out of your league.

If I found a hole like this in my kid's school network I would sue the school!

Hi

The Router configuration is not that much difficult, only few thing you have sure,
1) Correct ADSL Connection User name & password,
2) Chose unique ip address in All host.

Follow the mention bellow instruction to configure and connect to Wifi Router,

  • Plug the network cable ( Mine was Blue ) which comes with the Router Box pack to your computer. The other end goes into any of the Router Ethernet Port ( 1 or 2 or 3 or 4 )
  • Now type in 192.168.1.1 in IE or Firefox or any browser. You will prompted for password which is admin. You must be logged into Linksys Router.
  • Now since your ADSL modem is also having the same IP , we will change the IP address for WRT54G2 Router to 192.168.5.1
  • Under Setup >Basic Setup look for Network Setup and Change Router IP. Change to 192.168.5.1 and Save changes.
  • Since the IP has changed you will need to close the Browser.
  • Sometimes the IP doesnt change automatically. Do a IPCONFIG / RELEASE and then IPCONFIG / Renew

Making WRT54G2 Router talk to ADSL broadband modem

  • Type in same password ( admin )
  • You will be in Setup > Basic Setup

  • Now try to connect any application which talks to internet. You should be able to connect
Configuring for Wireless Connection :Now once your Router is talking with Modem, it is pretty easy to connect on Wireless. The only thing we need to setup here is Security. Lets get WIFI

  • As suggested in comments, there is a new mode which you can use : WPA2 with AES
  • Save changes.Just make sure you save that key to a notepad or remember it.

Wrt54g2 wireless security

Title: Setting up Cable Internet for the RV082 Article ID: 16585

Most cable Internet Service Providers (ISP) use a Media Access Control (MAC) Authentication to establish Internet connections for end-users. A MAC address is assigned a unique 48-bit (6-byte) integer that is attached to an Ethernet NIC for each computer. To set-up your Linksys router to a Cable ISP, you have to do MAC Cloning. MAC Cloning is a procedure which enables a router to copy the MAC address of the PC that's registered with the ISP.

NOTE: Before proceeding, use the computer that can go online when connected to the modem and follow the steps below.
Step 1:
Connect the Broadband modem to the computer using an Ethernet cable without the router installed and make sure that the Internet connection is active. If it is not, contact your ISP. If it can go online, the PC connected to the modem is the one that's registered with the ISP.
kb16585_001_en.png NOTE: The image may vary depending on the computer and modem you're using.

Step 2:
Once an active Internet connection is established through the modem, connect the modem and the computer to the router by following the instructions below.
Step 3:
After ensuring that you have an active Internet connection, connect the modem to the router's Internet port and the computer to any of the four Ethernet ports.
Step 4:
The Linksys router's front panel will indicate the status of the connection. After connecting the broadband modem to the WAN or Internet port, the computer to an available numbered port and powering on the router check the lights on the front panel of the router. For instructions, click here.

Step 5:
Access the router's web-based setup page. For instructions, click here.

Step 6:
Go to the Setup - Network, click the drop-down arrow under the WAN Connection Type field and select Obtain an IP automatically for WAN1.

kb16585_002_en.png NOTE : If you are going to have another Cable Internet as well in WAN2, select obtain an IP automatically as well.
kb16585_003_en.png

Step 7:
Click Save Settings.

Step 8:
Check in the System Summary if the router is getting a WAN1 IP or WAN2 IP.
kb16585_004_en.png

NOTE:
If there are no IP addresses seen in this field, go back to Setup then click the More option to reveal the MAC Clone settings.
kb16585_005_en.png
Step 9:
Select MAC Address from this PC.

kb16585_006_en.png

Step 10:
Click Save Settings Button.

Step 11:
Click System Summary. Check the value of the WAN1 or WAN2. If these have numbers, this means the router has been properly configured. You should now be able to access the Internet. If you're not online, perform a power cycle to synchronize the router with the modem.
kb16585_007_en.png NOTE: If the WAN1 IP or WAN2 IP is all zeroes (0.0.0.0) click first Release then click Renew buttons. If the WAN1 IP or WAN2 IP is still all zeroes (0.0.0.0) perform a power cycle.

If the IP Address starts with 192.168.1.xxx or if it has the same first three numbers (octets) as the router's IP address, change the router's LAN IP address to a different LAN segment.

Step 12:
Once the router is configured, perform a power cycle. Shutdown the computer and Unplug the router's power cable. Unplug the Broadband modem's power cable and wait for 30 seconds then plug in the Broadband modem's power cable and wait for its lights to appear stable. Plug in the router's power cable once the modem's lights appear stable.

Step 13:
Power on the computer on and test the Internet connection.

NOTE: If you're not online after performing this procedure, you may need to upgrade the firmware of the router. For instructions, click here .

You can access the web-based user interface utility of the RV082 by using one of two methods:

  • Through the RV082 IP address (192.168.1.1 by default), or
  • Through its default hostname ("RV082")

1. Open a web browser (Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator)

· By IP address: Type http://192.168.1.1 (192.168.1.1 is the default IP address of the RV082)

and click Go or press the [Enter] key.

· By Hostname: Type http://RV082 and click Go or press the [Enter] key.

2. When the username and password prompt appears, type admin in both the username and password fields. (admin is both the default username and default password for the RV082).

ADSL ISP provides same address for IP and Gateway

Can you manually change the WAN IP on the router?  If so, give it an IP like 123.12.167.5 and set the gateway address to 123.12.167.1.  If it asks for a subnet mask, give it 255.255.255.0.
If she has a Linksys router, you may need to change the operating "MODE" on it.  A lot of Linksys routers have 2 modes of operation---Router mode and Gateway mode.  For her configuration, make sure the Linksys is in Gateway mode.  This will fix the NAT problem.

Cheers!

Routing problem

I don't know if this will help because I don't see what you and seeing but here is an idea: In every routing scenario I have experienced, you must specify a default gateway with a specific IP address. 0.0.0.0 only points to the device itself, not the other WANS. The gateway IP addresses should be statically assigned. If there is DHCP involved, insure that the gateway address is not part of the DHCP scope but in an excluded range of reserved addresses. For SMTP to work the gateways (and you should have 2 or 3) must be properly configured and TCP port 25 enabled.
