Make sure you reset the player first

Yes, IF the method works for your player, the player must be turned off before replugging

The support website for this product is non-existent for a Toshiba F40 - it has a "T401," but it still has no FAQ or user's manual; I found a firmware update when i entered firmware f40, but i cannot verify if it was the correct model # firmware upgrade

Since the support is so sucky, I would consider calling Toshiba for a solution. It's an older model, so they may not even support it anymore (in Mp3 time, 3 years is old)

you have to do is put it in recovery mode (pressing a combination of buttons) Then reload the os with either sd or flash im not sure until I get the os what will work. If we can put the working one into recovery mode we might be able to copy it for use on other machines.

Toshiba stuck on start-up screen.

The windows files have been corrupted, I was hoping you might get into safe mode to try a system restore but your system will not allow it. If you can find your recovery disc a clean install is the best way to go. Try www.toshiba.com contact customer support about a replacement recovery disc.

Blue screen of death

Hi there
"Unmountable Boot Volume." means that the system 32 folder has become corrupt and probably you will have to recover the system.
If you have XP CD for a clean install, you have to change the boot order from within the bios (F2 on boot up) and tell it to boot from CD.
This will change the boot order and allow you to reinstall the OS.
Be warned that you WILL loose data if this is the only option open to you.

Good luck

Try running the Recovery Concole using your Windows installaiton CD (assuming you're running Windows XP).

Insert the CD and as the computer boots, look for the prompt that asks you to press any key to boot from the CD. Press any key on the keyboard and you will be taken to the Windows Setup screen.

Press 'r' to enter repair mode.

You should see this:

The Recovery Console provides system repair and recovery functionality.
Type EXIT to exit the Recovery Console and restart the computer.

1: C:\WINDOWS

Which Windows Installation would you like to log on to
(To cancel, press ENTER)?

Hit 1 and press Enter.

You will then be at a C:\ prompt. Type chkdsk -r and hit enter.

This will scan your harddrive for errors and fix any errors you may have.

Take out the CD and reboot the computer, see if it works now.

Here is a link to more detailed informaiton about using the Recovery Console to help resolve you boot issues:

White Screen on Toshiba Gigabeat F40

Try this: disconnect the player from the computer, turn it off, hold in the volume + button, and reconnect the player to the computer while holding the volume + button in. Keep holding the volume + button for an additional 5-50 seconds. Windows should eventually go into recovery mode and revive the player- it will pop up a window that says Found New Hardware Wizard.

You need to do a recovery using the recovery console. There is an option during startup, if you are running XP or later, to press F11 for emergency recovery.

Press F11 and choose the option to recover and backup.

This will backup all files and programs currently installed on your computer.

After the recovery process finishes, you will have to go through the process of setting up your computer, like you did when you first bought it.

After you are all setup again, it is a good idea to create recovery disks under the 'Start' menu, 'Recovery' option.
