Question about Amana ABB1927DE Bottom Freezer Refrigerator

Bottom freezer coils freezing up

Coils behind panel in the freezer section are freezing over with a thick coat of frost which causes the refrigerator section to get warm.  what needs to be done to resolve this problem?

    Freezer coils get thick coating of ice and refrigerator gets warm. We defrost the freezer and the fridge will work again. this solution only last at the most about 1 month and we are back where we started. Lately the time between defrostings is getting closer together. I have seen this problem posted by others. the only solution offered is to defrost but this seems like there is a mechanical failure of some kind. Should be a more long lasting solution!

DEFROST PROBLEM CHECK YOUR DEFRST HEATER,DEFROST T-STAT=LOCATED BEHIND THE PANEL BOTH ARE LOCATED ON THE COIL WITH A OHMETER OR DEFROST WITH HAIR DRYER IT WILL HELP FOR 10 DAYS OR SO.

Defrosting Problem


HI,

Did you try unpluging all the cords from back for 3 hours and then plug it back in.This is know as a hard reset.

The upper portion of the freezer turns off, causing the ice to melt. And the cooler side bottom drawer turns into a freezer. I can't figure out what's going on.


You have a frost blocked evaporator. Translation: The cooling coils, located behind the back wall inside the freezer section, have plugged up with frost (usually caused by a burnt out defrost heater, located at the bottom of these coils) which prevents the cold air from circulating inside the freezer, and into the top of the fresh foods section. At the same time, this blocked air flow allows very cold air at the bottom of the freezer section to migrate back into the bottom of the fresh foods section, and thus freeze item in the bottom bins of the refrigerator. Unload the freezer, take the shelves out and remove the back panel. Melt the frost with a hair blower, and change out the heater at the bottom.

Side by side thermostat set low seems like it runs a lot more than it use to freezer and fridge are boyh cold


Check your coils underneath the fridge to be sure they are clean.
Check your condensor fan (bottom rear of fridge) to make sure it is blowing air freely.
Make sure you have a good supply in the freezer, All of your cooling comes from the freezer section and a mostly empty freezer will result in more frequent running as ther is not enough stock to help maintian and hold freezing temperatures.
Check your freezer section to make sure there is no visible frost on the back wall of the freezer (down low on the panels behind and slightly above the lowest freezer basket. If you see frost starting to develop it means you have a defrost issue starting and will want to adress it rather quickly. Either a problem with the defrost control board (inside fridge/freezer control compartment) or the defrost thermostat (behind the freezer back panel on top of the evaporator coils).

Frost accumulating in the freezer . Whirlpool Gold purchased two years ago


Sounds like an issue with your defrost circuit. Usually the defrost terminator. It is mounted on the coil behind the panel inside the freezer. There are two wires going to it. It is the size of a quarter around and maybe an inch thick. Good luck!

Refrigerator is barley cold, still makes ice, condensation inside of frostless freezer


Hi: The fact that it still makes ice tells me the freezer is a zero degrees. When you said condensation in the freezer did you mean frost? If your defrost heater fails it will cause the frost free freezer to build up frost. The frost will build up and block the vent that supplies the cold air to the fresh food. The defrost heater is behind the metal wall at the back of the freezer, at the very bottom. A glass tube with a metal coil in it. The coil can break and stop the defrosting. Replace that. Use a hair dryer to melt the frost from behind the panel. All of it top to bottom. You need to remove all the frost to free up the airways. I hope this helps, Jeff

A refrigerator or freezer that is cooling, but cooling poorly, may have a problem in one of several areas:

Evaporator coils
Condenser
Poor cooling is often the result of a heavy frost build-up on the evaporator coils or a condenser that is clogged with dust, lint, and dirt.

Evaporator coils Poor cooling is often the result of a heavy frost build-up on the evaporator coils. You can't see these coils without removing a panel on the inside of your freezer. A sure sign that there is a build-up is the presence of any frost or ice build-up on the inside walls, floor, or ceiling of the freezer. Such a frost build-up usually indicates a problem in the self-defrosting system or damaged door gaskets.

The refrigerator is supposed to self-defrost approximately four times in every 24 hour period. If one of the components in the self-defrosting system fails, the refrigerator continues to try to cool. Eventually, though, so much frost builds up on the evaporator coils that the circulating fan can't draw air over the coils. There may still be a small amount of cooling because the coils are icy, but with no air flow over the coils, cooling in the refrigerator compartment is quite limited.

Here's an inexpensive, though inconvenient, way to determine if the problem is with the self-defrosting system. Remove all of the perishable food from the refrigerator and freezer, turn the thermostat in the refrigerator to Off, and leave the doors open for 24 to 48 hours. (Be sure to have several towels ready in case the melting frost and ice causes the drip pan to overflow). This allows the refrigerator to defrost "manually." When the frost and ice build-up has completely melted away, turn the thermostat back to a normal setting. If the refrigerator then cools properly, it indicates a problem with one of three components in the self-defrosting system:

  • The defrost timer

  • The defrost thermostat (also called the bi-metal switch)

  • The defrost heater

If it still does not cool properly, there may be a problem with the refrigerant level or the compressor. You may need to consult with a qualified appliance repair technician to further diagnose the problem

To clean them, disconnect the refrigerator from the power source, use a refrigerator condenser brush (see the Appliance Accessories section) and your vacuum cleaner to clean the coils of any lint, pet hair, etc. You may not be able to get to all of the condenser from the front, it may be necessary to clean the remainder of the condenser from the rear of the refrigerator.

Freezer not freezing


when the freezer is not freezing, check the fan and fan motor in the freezer section. It should be running when the compressor is running. Check for frost. If you see frost on the rear inside panel, the frost is usually about 3 in. thick on the inside. Check and make sure the fan next to the compressor is running, if your's has one. It will run when the compressor is running. Check for gaps in your door gasket. If there is no frost, both fans are running, compressor is running, and no gaps, and your coils outside the refrigerator are clean, it doesn't sound good.

Have a built in with bottom freezer. freezer works great for three or four days, then coil freezes up solid. i get out the old hair dryer and in about an hour i can defrost the coil.three or four days...
