On my PS2, games all play fine, but when I insert a DVD, the screen goes black (just like it does whenever it finds a DVD), but the player never starts. The screen just stays black, and a reboot is required to get back to the menu.
If I use the browser the DVD is recognized, and "DVD Video" is shown in the corner of the screen as the type of media. When I select the DVD and press X, the black screen appears.
Expected behavior: The screen flashes, "> Play" appears momentarily, then the DVD begins to play.
Actual behavior: Screen stays black. "> Play" never appears. DVD does not play.
* Running "Diagnosis" (Version > Console > Options > Diagnosis) * Taking the unit appart and cleaning the lens.
Diagnosis had no apparent effect. After blowing the dust out of the unit and cleaning the laser lens with a soft, clean, lint-free cloth and a drop of isopropyl alcohol, I did get playback on a DVD. After reassembling the unit, though, no DVDs play. I took it apart and cleaned it again, just in case, but no joy...

JoTex.. The PS2 wont play blueray disks ..most of the older ps2 games have a purple or almost black color..Try checking the games to see if they are damaged, such as finger prints large scratches ect, try a dvd lens cleaner they are pretty cheep.(the disc type). the lens my be dirty,, or you can use a can of compressed air like the type for your keyboard. just spray inside with the disk tray open..hope this helps
If your PS2 is chipped for playing PS2 fake games then try the following steps:
1)Insert the DVD movie in your PS2 and hold the power button of PS2 until it light goes red.
2)Now again hold the power button until the light turns in green. and after that your DVD movie should work.
If above solution does not works replace the lens with a new one.
