You will need to enable the "Distinctive Ring" feature on the PSC 2210 as shown here.

A "Thanks for trying" rating would indicate that your problem is not solved. What problem are you still havng? The link has the method for setting up your 2210 to answer only the double-ring, which sounded like what you needed. Did this not work?

My fax will not send. the report says fax sent and the result is no answer

Sounds rather conflicted...any way, first step "send" a fax to a phone that rings (cell phone, phone near the fax). Make sure that the phone you are calling rings, if not plug a phone in to the fax line and make sure you have a dial tone. If you do try to change the phone line on the fax and repeat. Basicly this step is to ensure the fax is dialing out.

Next, dial the number you are faxing to with your cell phone or another phone. Does the fax machine at the other end answer (squaking noises). If not are you dialing the right number. If the fax machine at the other end does pick up, hang up and wait a few mins (so the line will clear) and try to send your fax again.

Try sending a test fax to a known good (have sent faxes to the number before with success) fax. If this works, its a communication hand shake error. You may need to power cycle both fax machines.

Last Test, plug a different fax machine in were this one is. Using the same phone line and such try to fax again. If this is the only thing that works, the fax machine may have a bad modem.

If further information on testing the modem on the HP fax is needed let me know.

I hope one of these step gives you the help and information you are looking for.

None of our faxes are going out and we receive error number 87

set the fax so you can hear dial tone... if no dial tone then check the fax line.... if fax line plugged in... plug it out of the fax and plug into a phone... if still no dial tone then change fax cable... if dial tone... then call your cell... if static... fax wont work call phone company... if you get a funny signal call phone company...

Lexmark X6170 Has a shared phone/fax line with different numbers

Open the Lexmark "Fax Printer Setup Utility". Click on the "Connection/Dialing" tab. In the "Interact with Phone Line" section, "Answer Incoming Calls:" should be set to "If fax tones are detected".

If this is turning out to be too unreliable for you, you will need to either manually receive incoming faxes (by changing the setting to "Manual"), or you will need to at least spring for a separate phone number with a distinctive ring for incoming faxes.

Ricoh 1013F Fax Line answering phone calls

Not quite sure the Ricoh has what is commonly none as a fax switch. This actually catches the call and looks for the fax tone from the sending fax to determine if it is a fax or not. The Ricoh can not determeine what number is dialing in. It only knows a call is incoming.

You can ourchase a fax switch online or Radio shack had them.

Cannot fax

Is thi sin an office?
Are you using a direct outside line or is it an office extension?

Your office extension may have restrictions on it and you would need to remove those.

I would confrim the numbers are fax numbers and that that line is ok by:
  • Dialing those fax numbers from a working phone line other than the fax machine
  • Unplug the fax and plug in a regular phone in the same line and see if you can dial out and then try those fax numbers again.
If the numbers work from a normal phone but not the fax line, then I would check that line for restrictions.

I just bought a used hp 3200se and am trying to use it as a stand alone fax. It (so far) does not answer incoming calls. I found that I can manually answer a fax call and then the machine seems to work fine.
I tried connecting to ...oh, by the way, I have digital phone service from Comcast, an analog line and it seems to work fine. So maybe the 6310xi is the same or maybe there are setting to deal with a digital line. Maybe something in this will help.

Fax one phone/fax line but always answered by fax

You can change the number of rings before the fax machine can pick up. Three is usually a good number. You would have to pickup the phone on the first two rings.

They make devices that do that but everytime I have used them I would end up getting the fax tone when I'm trying to make a voice. The boxes are great at dealing with incomming phone calls from pstn or land line based calls, but if you are getting cell phone calls or voice calls comming in from digital, DSL, or VOIP lines, it has a hard time sensing voice from fax when people are using phones like that. There designed for analog phone line installation but if you're on a DSL they won't work.

Fax network not working

Is your phone line plugged into the proper receptical on the fax? It should be plugged into the LINE slot, not the PHONE slot. The PHONE SLOT IS TO CONNECT A TELEPHONE TO THE FAX. IT IS NOT FOR THE INCOMING PHONE LINE. If your phone connection is correct, try calling your fax machine from a cell phone while you are at the fax machine. Listen on the cell to see if the fax machine picks up the line. If it does not, go into your fax machine's settings, either INITIAL SETUP FAX SETUP, or PHONE SETTINGS. You may have to try several settings to find one that works, depending on your fax machine. Try going to RECEIVE SETUP on your fax machines setup menu. Scroll through the settings, writing each down on paper. Try RING DELAY, RING TIME, NUMBER OF RINGS TO ANSWER , or any other settings relating to how your fax answers the phone line. Try changing each setting, one at a time, and try calling your fax to see if it answers. There may also be settings on your fax to set it up if an answering machine or telephone is on the same line.
