Try to use the second key on the bottom left of your keyboard to see the location of the task bar on the screen, if the bar appears and disappears once the key is released bring the mouse pointer on any place where the task bar appeared and then right click on it go to properties and uncheck the option auto hide the task bar.

Why were start menu and task bar lost?

Hi B.G.R.,

Have you tried

Pressing ALT or F10 in your keyboard to make the Menu Bar temporarily visible. If you want it to be permanently visible, go into View > Toolbars > Menu Bar, or right-click the Navigation Toolbar (the Reload button, for example) and select Menu Bar.
If this doesn't help, right-click the navigation toolbar, select Customize... and click Restore Default Set. If it doesn't appear right away, try pressing ALT or F10. You can go into View > Toolbars > Menu Bar to make it permanently visible, or right-click the Navigation Toolbar and select Menu Bar.

MENU BAR IS GONE...PUFF, GONE

Press ctrl+esc to see if the start menu pops up, if it does not then proceed by trying the following steps below.

Make sure explorer.exe is still running:
Press ctrl+alt+delete to get into Task Manager and do File -> New Task -> explorer.exe -> OK

Otherwise check to see if your task bar is auto hiding:
Move the cursor to all four edges of the screen in an attempt to locate the hiding task bar. If the task bar does pop up, right click on it and press properties. Proceed by unchecking Auto-hide the taskbar under the Taskbar tab and pressing Apply and OK.

If all else fails, try rebooting the PC.

Internet explorer task bar missing

Try pressing the left Alt key alone. Does the menu bar appear?
Try right-clicking the area where the menu bar is supposed to be. Try different spots around the upper part of the window, eventually you should see in the context menu an option to turn on the menu bar.

I HAVE A WINDOW XP HOME EDITION AND WHEN I START MY COMPUTER THE ONLY THING THAT COMES UP IS THE BACKGROUND. THERE ARE NO ICONS OR A BAR AT BOTTOM OF SCREEN.

the icons and the bar(task bar) at the bottom of the screen are enabled by the explorer.exe file

it starts automatically but in your case it is not starting

to start it when your computer starts and comes at the desktop, press alt+ctrl+delete button at the same time to bring up the task manager

when you do this a task manager shows up in a window

in task manager window click on file, it will be located on the top left portion on task manager

now click on "new task(run)"

this opens another window, in that window type
"explorer"
without the quotes "" and press enter
this will bring you icons and task bar at the bottom of the screen

Task bar is missing on bottom of screen after pc wakes up.

mine does this with windows 7, right click on desktop and open 'personalize' then open 'taskbar and start menu'
From here choose to move your taskbar location to the side of the screen and click apply. it should return, then just tell it to go back to the bottom.
