Question about Gateway FPD2185W 21 in. LCD Television

Gateway monitor Is there somewhere I can find step-by-step instructions on removing and installing the capacitors. Is this something that someone with very little soldering experience could do? We've opened the monitor and think we've located the bad ones. Just not sure on how best to proceed. Thank you for your help.

I had the same problem and replace all eight caps in the bunch. I've soldered speaker wires and the like before but never circuit boards. I watched this video and just like that, I was a pro. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_NU2ruzyc4. I had to search de-soldering old circuits on youtube also. Oh, and my monitor works now. If anybody reading this is in the Orlando area and you do not want to do it. Reply here.

Instructions for changing the capacitors in my Gateway DX4300-17 monitor

If you need instructions on Soldering, you should leave something as intricate as electronic repairs to a professional. Plus, from what I have seen, flatscreen monitors have very few capacitors, if you have blown them all you have bigger problems than replacing them.

My daughter's tower was just returned from being repaired. We plugged everything up and turned on the monitor and on the screen it says "Power Saving Mode" and turns off. Can someone suggest...

Power saving mode means the monitor is not receiving input. Assuming the Monitor is working properly, the tower is not producing the input or the cable is damaged. If the tower has another video out, try pluging into that. Try using another cable, if the problem continues that likely means that the computer is not working properly. The next step would be re seating the graphics card. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O9x097QRXeA
Simply remove then re-install the Graphics card. The device is very static sensitive and you should be sure to ground yourself before opening the case of the computer.
If that doesn't work it's likely the computer was damaged during the repair.
Or was not repaired at all, such is not unheard of; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WaZFGD0WJc0

Can someone point me to a manual for the Gateway M-7351u? I'm wanting to finish removing the motherboard in order to take it somewhere to be repaired.

I found a couple of sources that might help you. Check out the following websites:
This is to purchase a complete service manual for the M series laptops http://www.mpcdrivers.com/Service_Manuals/M7800.html
This site has a step by step guide to taking apart the laptop down to the motherboard. http://www.insidemylaptop.com/replace-keyboard-gateway-m-series-notebook/
If these don't work, let me know and I'll continue to dig for you!

Gateway FPD1830 Monitor Flickers then goes black

Hello,

It sounds like you have a monitor with a common problem. After a few years some LCD monitors will blow a power supply. The problem is caused by parts called capacitors overheating in the confined space of the monitor. If you are good at electronics repair/soldering you can usually fix the problem. Check out a few pictures on my web site www.ccl-la.com/badcaps.htm You can take the back cover off your monitor and look for the bad parts, replace any that look like the pictures and your monitor should work fine. The capacitors do need to be installed with the correct + and - connections, note the stripe on the old one and insert the new one the same way. Look in our monitor repair section for step by step repair guide for this model. If you don't want to try the repair yourself we offer a repair service for $35 plus shipping.

I hope this helps, if so please rate my solution.

Gateway FPD1960 monitor power suply

Cleaning won't do it.
It probably needs all new capacitors on the board. are any canister looking components bulged up at the tops ? This is the most common problem on the ones I fix.

Gateway FPD2185W monitor

When you say that you replaced "all the capacitors" what are
you referring to? There are 8 identical capacitors in the corner
of the Power Supply/Inverter board that go bad, but there are
also 3 capacitors in the corner of the Main board nearest the
connector that goes to the power supply that can also go bad.
These are associated with the part "U15" nearby, which is the
3.3 Volt voltage regulator for the main board. If these caps go
bad, this regulator can fail to operate, and you will get no display.

Monitor Will not come on anymore

I and many many many others like you have the same problem. The suggested solution is to replace the capacitors on the board. (look for the "blotted" ones). This may be too complicated for most and should NOT cost more than $75. BOTTOM line: DON'T BUY THIS MONITOR AND DON'T BUY ANYTHING FROM GATEWAY!

Replacing Inverter Board

I did some poking around and only found a few places that sold inverter boards for this monitor. Ebay has one that sells for about $80: http://cgi.ebay.com/Backlight-Inverter-for-Gateway-FPD1930-LCD-Monitor_W0QQitemZ160070918225QQcategoryZ174QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWINQ3aPOST0Q3aRECOQ3aBINQQcmdZViewItem I wasn't able to find any specific instructions posted, however, taking a typical LCD panel apart and replacing the board shouldn't be too difficult. The only hard part is not getting shocked, which is why this is not a job for the typical user. Anyway to disassemble the typical LCD you remove the pedestal from the back of the LCD then remove the screws around the back of the LCD, remove the back and look for the inverter board. Typically it is covered with a metal shield; again the hard part is knowing how to correctly handle the parts. Considering you can buy a new 17" LCD for $120 to $150 (and has a 1 year warranty) you might want to consider investing in a new monitor instead. If you have any other questions let us know, otherwise please don?t forget to rate this posting.
