I am having the same problem. I tried a new HDMI cable. I changed the resolution, like the Phillips site suggested. I then brought the player backand exchanged it. same problem.. I do not experience the problem with component cables though. But then I lose the upscaling capabilities, don't I? AND I had to buy an extra set of cables, besides the HDMI cable.

I found a solution. Check on Phillips website to see if there is a BIOS update available. Download it, burn it to a cd. Load it in the player and it will update. After I did that, no more strange colors.

Unable to read mkv and avi video files from usb drive on philips dvp5990 dvd player

what error does it give? mine reads avis fine, as long as theyre within resolution limits. same for windows media format. couldnt get the mkv files to work though. the usb drive has to be formatted fat32, ntfs does not seem to work. burning these files to dvd as a data disc is another option. lets you fit 10+ hours of video on the disc vs your standard 2 or 4 hour max limits.

Distorted color on hdmi output

If you haven't already stumbled across the fix: I just had the exact same problem after about eights months of casual use. Unplugging the DVD player for about 15 minutes and then plugging it back in "solved" the problem. Until next time it happens, anyway.

DVd audio sounds slow

Check you owners manual for the audio settings. Check these pages and note that the underline setting are the factory settings.Pages 37-41.These are the setting most likely changed. You can always reset the player to factory settings. This will most likely restore everything to normal. This procedure can be found on page 47. The reset function is call default. This is a factory reset function. The function is found in the settings menu under the preferences. If you do not have a copy of the owners manual handy, you can use this link and find a pdf copy on the philips website.http://www.p4c.philips.com/cgi-bin/dcbint/cpindex.pl?scy=US&slg=AEN&cat=DVD_HOME_THEATER_CA&sct=DVD_PLAYERS_SU&session=200906 If you still cannot get the player working correctly, you can call the Phillips customer support at this telephone number 1-888-744-5477. Give them the model number of your dvd player and the problem you are having with the sound slowing down. They will be able to help you solve this problem. It is possible that the DVD is not in the correct format ie.R or RW or if whoever made the recording failed to finalise the disc so as to make it compatible with other DVD players

Maryann,
You should have an RCA cable connector with your DVD player (three wire connector color coded yellow, red, white). If you plug one end of that into your DVD player (out) and into the input #1 in the back of your TV that should be sufficient. Then just select from the input menu on your Tv to watch that input. You do this by the buttons on the lower left of the TV. One is marked "input/exit". Pressing that button should bring-up your input menu then use "menu/select" button to select input 1 and try playing the DVD...
I do have the owner and service manual if you need it just let me know...

No color when playing DVD

your player is set to the wrong format ie either ntsc if your in europe or pal if your in america, you need to go to the setup and make sure the dvd setup is for your region. pal in europe, ntsc in america..most dvd players automatically switch.but sometimes people change the settings without knowing.
