Hi,

It what manner does you My Book connect into your network?

Do you know what your area network addressing scheme is?

Is it 192.168.0.??? or 192.168.1.???

Thanks,
Worldvet

Is your My Book connected directly to your PC or via a Router or Router on your DSL Modem?

How many times have you shut down, disconnected the ethernet connection for the My Book, rebooted and then connected it and not have it discovered?

    Hi, again.

We don't mean to appear as patronizing your intelligence, we get all types here and you clearly are pretty up to speed so bear with us. We are encouraged to restate the problem and point out the obvious. It gives us a good gauge as to how competent the customer is so we don't talk down or patronize inappropriately.

Can I bring in another expert to consult on this? I know you are frustrated with this thing and well you're not the only user out there who is. I've seen numerous requests for help on the My Book and WD is dealing with a lot of dissatisfied customers.

Let me know if I can bring another Top Gun in on this. I have my hunch, but want a second opinion. Does this make sense to you.

So, if you can, take a breath and try to relax, these things happen. After all they are just computers and in the long run and they ain't perfect.

To answer your question there is no default IP address. But, in that line, they are designed and expected to be attached in Home Area Networks that use the assigned 192.168.x.x number assignment. Since yours is 200.200.200.x I'm think your network is on a WAN or powered by a linux server? Or, did you set this up with the hope of using remote access to retrieve files to playback at another location? It is not so important, but can you tell us what the environment is you are on? Is this a HAN or WAN?

    Thanks,
    Worldvet

    Hi,

Thanks for the additional information that helps me understand your addressing scheme. There would be no default IP address.

You can discover your My Book IP address by running this command from a command window.

Start Menu, Run. In the command window ping your My Book and the response will give you the ip address.

However, I believe there is some software missing yet to be installed that would act as the translator between your PC and the My Book so you can schedule backups, etc.

I can look up the available software for you gladly sometime later today. Its just a rather busy day for me in my business and I won't be able to do this until I get my local work done.

Most of us run our own business or shop and you'll just have to bear with us when we have these busy days.

Will get this to you later today now that I fully understand your setup.

    Regards,
    Worldvet

    Hi,

Here is the product page that contains download software that would also be on the original CD. I looked up know issues, one of which is trying to backup from a source that has over 1,000 file on it.

However, and we see this a lot with Printers but could apply to your My Book too.

There can be major problems if you install the software while the device is attached via USB cable.

Resolution: Remove the USB cable at the PC. Uninstall all software related to the My Book, including any entry for it in Device Manger under USB entries, access the entry and go to Drivers and then choose uninstall.

Use a registry cleaner to clean up after the uninstallers run.

Reboot clean without the My book attached. Then shut off the PC.

Leave the My Book disconnected, reinstall the My Book suite of software. If at some point in the installation, the installer says to NOW connect the USB cable then do it when asked, not before. Allow the software package to fully install. Install all software packages from WD. If you haven't been prompted to connect the USB cable. Shut the PC down upon completing all the installation chores. Once the PC is off, connect the USB cable and power up. when Windows recognizes the new USB device, and prompts you for the driver location, choose Cancel. The WD software will take over from there. Launch the WD software package and run your discovery program.

If after all this the My Book cannot be found by the WD software, the number scheme you are using for IP addresses behind your firewall, may be at fault, Access your router, using the address you find for your router by opening a command windows from the run command and type ipconfig /all This will display the router address, type that address in your browser and you will have accessed your router's software, enter the Firewall and give your My Book permissions to talk to your PC.

The router's firewall would be the last place to setup and look for indications the My Book is recognized on your system. And then you just give it permissions.

Let me know how this goes for you.

How do you fix a external hard drive that will not turn on

Basic Troubleshooting:

-Check all connections (Ethernet, Power, USB, etc)
-Install the appropriate driver for the device, usually included on a CD
-Double Check compatibility with your system (system requirements usually on packaging of product)
-If you haven't rebooted since you set it up, then reboot, this fixes a lot of things
-Try the product on another computer
-Try different cables/ports on the comptuer.

If nothing works, then send it in if it's under warranty or contact a professional service.

A Network Drive, that which is connected via an Ethernet cable will not appear as new hardware. You should have connected it to the router on your network, then seen it as a network device.
Check My Network Places.
You will need to Map a drive to see it every time you boot.

External hard drive not recognized

You need to first narrow down the problem to either your PC or the external hard drive. Do you have access to any other PCs you could try connecting your hard drive to? (think friends, family, public PCs, etc)

If the hard drive works on other PCs, we know it isn't a problem with the hard drive.

If it turns out that the hard drive is fine and the PC is the problem, I would suggest going in to Device Manager and uninstalling everything USB related. Once you have done this, either reboot your PC or right-click inside device manager and "scan for new hardware". All of your USB related devices should reload their drivers automatically. You may want to try this both with and without the usb drive connected.

Another tip would be to try various USB ports.

Power is present, usb is connected, computer is not recognizing the external harddrive

I just had the same problem with my simpletech 500GB. Was working fine and then all of a sudden it wouldn't show up. I was trippin out thinking I might lose everything. After reading up and looking for answers nothing worked no where. So I prayed and asked God to help me figure this out because I had put all of our family pictures in the hard drive and would lose them all if it no longer worked or I would have to re format. Long story short, a few minutes after praying to the Lord Jesus, I got a thought in my head to follow the instructions on the box about installing it. Unplugged everything and then proceeded with the 1,2,3. Plugged in the usb to the hard drive, plugged it to the computer and then I plugged the power box in and low and behold the external hard drive showed up as when I first did it a few days ago. Thank you Jesus for the simple answer on the simpletech. I hope this is helpful to someone out there who is pulling there hair out like I was for a few hours. God Bless all and may the Love of Jesus impact and save your life. HE'S COMING SOON! Be ready

I can not link up with My Book World Edition 500GB

That is because the MyBook is set with a default IP address of 192.168.1.257. You will have to put a static IP address in that subnet range in order to be able to see the external drive. Hope this helps....
