Question about Office Equipment & Supplies

Ibico binding machine

It still works, but it's very hard to punch holes in more than 10 sheets. Does it have blades that need to be sharpened? If so, where do we go for that service?

Sharpening blades for qualcast 35s

With a cylinder mower the sharpness of the blade is only part of the concern. The fixed blade is like one of the blades of a pair of shears and each "blade" of the revolving cylinder acts as the other.

As long as only grass is being cut (no stones) the blades will last a long time with only occasional adjustment to the fixed blade as per instruction manual.
After much use or in case of damage the fixed blade will need replacing or sharpening. If it is badly worn it will need removing and sharpening by a specialist with the correct equipment but otherwise the light application of a file, stone or a patent sharpener and then readjust the blade per manual.

When eventually the cylinder becomes worn or sustains damage it must be removed and machine trued and sharpened using a lathe or similar.

An accurately sharpened cylinder and a true and sharp fixed blade correctly adjusted will consistently cut paper across the complete width of the blade when turned by hand. A competently sharped and adjusted cylinder mower will cut the thinnest tissue like the finest scissors without binding.

What is a coil binding machine?

Coil binding is like a slinky, twirling and binding your punched sheets into a book.
An Electric coil inserter speedily binds books up to about 150 sheets

I have an Ibico ibimaster 400e Binder which is not punching out the holes correctly.

First, clear the waste tray of all hole punchings under the machine, and check the holes where the punchings feed from for any blockages. The worst thing is the clear plastic pages you use for covers, these can block up the holes. So you may need to pick them out of the holes using tweezers.

Then try again. If you have to punch clear covers, then try to do them with just a few pages on both sides so that the plastic sheet isn't the first thing the blades hit.

My royal ag10x cross cut shredder is losing steam - labors thru 4 pages at a time and i've never done any maintence in 8 years. is there a way to sharpen the blades?

May not be the blades that need sharpening.....try putting some lightweight shredder oil on a sheet of paper then shred the sheet of paper....do this 2 or three times and see if it helps. It won't hurt to put a good bit of oil on the paper.

ERROR E 725 AND MISFEED IN ADF

Most times on these machines the most common problem is worn document rollers.
Cleaning them will improve document feeding, most times they have to be replaced espeicailly the lower ****** roll or ****** pad. These pads and ****** rolls will cause multi-sheet feeds when they are worn.
Sometimes paper hole punches fall into the machine and cause sensor actuator arms not to go up and down, or just bearly resting on the face of the sensor.
At times linkages will bind, paper dust on the sensors causes jams, sensor actuators bind and will pop off its mounting position Clutches will not work correctly, they slip and too fast for the eye to see.

If there are further inside dissassebley of the ADF, this might take a service technition to look further into the matter for repair.

Babylock EMP6 problem with thread cutting

The thread cutting mechanism is dull and needs to be replaced or sharpened. I had the same problem on my machine. I found another post where another user said it has to be replaced every 150 hours of machine use, the cost was 62 dollars. My dealer would not sell me the parts he said I had to bring it in, so I decided to sharpen it myself. See picture for more details. To start take the two screws of the top of the chrome plate to reveal cutter that is above bobbin. The cutter is in two parts both chrome plated. The hook part is held in place by a copper plated screw, the blade (shown in picture hanging off to the side) is held in place by one small screw. I sharpened the blade on a fine grit Japanese water stone (brown block shown in picture) to a razor edge and about a 7 degree angle; the tip of the blade must ride on the hook. This still did not make the cutter work perfectly so I had to take the hook out and reform the small hole in the hook that the blade rides over with a the un-fluted end of a 5/64 high speed steel drill bit. Was not hard to do because the hook is not hardened steel, at least on mine. When putting the blade back on make sure it is resting against the rolled black pressed pin before tightening down.

Good luck!f1f2e5b.jpg

Are we able to get the Binding machine blades sharpened. We have an Ibico, Ibimatic-No 315468. Have had for about 5 years. Thanks

This product is now manufactured by GBC (General Binding Corp, part of Acco) and was replaced by the CombBind C150 - just FYI. The lower-end machines such as this seem to run in the range of $200 USD.

I have never heard of sharpening these "blades", as they are actually punches, and there are likely some 20 small, individual "blades" that are part of the system. You might check with a local dealer or office supply partner, to see if they know of anyone who could or would perform the service and what they might charge for it. I believe that if you could find someone to do it, it would cost more than it would to simply replace the machine. There does not appear to be a way to replace the punch mechanism (die / strip usually) in these models.

An example of a machine with interchangeable dies is located at: http://www.factory-express.com/Binding_Machines/WireBindingMachines/GBC-TL2900/GBC-wirebind-TL2900.html.
Obviously, this is a much higher-level (expensive) machine than the one you have here. But this is an example of the interchange concept, and associated costs.

So, this is a rather long way of saying, and trying to explain why I recommend that, you check with a local dealer perhaps, but plan to replace the machine. If it lasted you this long, the same level of machine should last just as well, and $40 US a year isn't too bad!

If you need further assistance, please post back. Otherwise, thank you for using and rating FixYa!

Ibico Binding Machine User Manual/Instructions

I found the IbiMaster 400 manual!!! The key was finding out that Ibico was sold to General Binding Corp. (GBC). I went to the GBC web site and it linked me to Acco. I called Acco and they promptly sent me an old, scanned PDF of the manual. The very helpful POC at Acco was:
