Question about Microwave Ovens

Microwave handle My GE microvawe handle broke, I glued it, soon it broke again - this time with the door frame. GE offers a new door assembly for $215 (delivered) but we no instruction how to put it on. Is there a better solution than to buy this expensive part? If not, can I install the door myself? Thank you for your reply. rabinovich@comcast.net

    Model JVM1660BB005

  • rabinovich Jun 24, 2008

It is JVM1660BB005 (by GE), over-the-range oven with filters and a fan, instulled 7 years ago. If it were the counertop, I would definetely consider replacement but with over-the-range one the installation will strongly increase the cost.

If not GE, what brand would you suggest?

Hi,

Replacing microwave doors assembly is relatively easy with just two (2) hinge support. However, due to the very nature of the device, it is best left for professionals as microwave leakage may be an issue. Alternately, you can receive instructions from the parts supplier as to the correct procedure(s). Further some of these suppliers might offer the parts/assembly for a considerably lesser price. You may want to try:
1. Appliance Help
2. PartSelect
3. Easy Appliance Parts
4. PartStore

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

It is a bit complicated. Best get a qualified microwave repair man to fix this for you. May cost you a bit extra, but will be definitely safer and worth the while in the long run.
Improperly fixed doors can be dangerous and hazardous..

Hope that helps!

Which model of microwave is in question? I would just buy a new microwave. GE microwaves are poor quality and something always seems to go wrong with them. On this website alone I have seen tons of people with problems with them. Microwaves of much better quality can be bought for less than a new door assembly. Let me know if you have any other questions. Usually the control pad goes bad or they start to smoke.

The Kenmore Elite 80829 is an excellent over-the-counter microwave if you want to get a new one which is still what I recommend. The door can be installed by yourself if you are still interested. Let me know what you want to do and I would help with whatever direction that you want to go

Rabinovich,
What is the model number? Is this a built in microwave? Considering the price of the door, replacing the microwave would hopefully be an option. It is possible to put it on yourself, but I need some more specific information.
Thanks,
Ken

It's possible the high-voltage capacitor is bad, but I suspect a bad interlock monitor switch. This is one of several switches operated by the door latches, and it's wired to cause the fuse to blow if you try to operate the oven with the door open. The switch may be stuck, which can happen if the oven door gets slammed. It's also possible the switch is good but is out of adjustment.

Replacement switches are available. The Sears parts website has an exploded diagram showing where it's located (item number 30). You should let a professional make the repair, though. Microwave ovens are dangerous items to work on, and if door repairs aren't done correctly there can be excessive microwave leakage.

I would like to replace the microwave oven handle.

The inside of the door has a Black Plastic frame about 1 inch wide. This frame can be removed by placing a thin screwdriver between it and the outer door frame and gently (very gently) prying it away from the door. It takes a little wiggling of the frame but it will unlock. On each end of the handle is a philips head screw that holds the handle to the door.

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here: http://tinyurl.com/gv383

They usually sell parts for far less than GE.

I have a GE Profile Microwave and the handle is broken....

I have the same issue. The Handle broke off my GE Microwave Oven (Model JVM1190SY 001). GE does not sell the handle seperately from what I can tell. I just ordered a new door. It's rediculously expensive. I tried to replace the handle with a nice drawer pull but couldn't find a size pull to match and I broke the plastic cover trying to get access to the screws for the handle, which is why I decided to buy the new door. Hopefully installation is not that difficult. This oven was manufactured in 2001, seems the handles have a 7 year life span.

Check out this door frame diagram, specifically number 1805. It clips on to the door frame. Remove it using a dull table knife or something similar (be careful not to scratch or break anything). You will then have access to the bottom screw.
