Question about Canon PowerShot S51S Digital Camera

1 Answer

USB Device Not Recognized

Okay I don't know how this camera scored a 10/10 when it has such poor hardware and website support.

I can plug this camera into 100 different computers and they all say "USB Device Not Recognized". I came to this support page and it said something about 4 Services required, 3 I have but the 4th is some proprietary ****. Does this mean I need to install something off the CD? If there is a file required why is this file not available on the website? The website says WindozeXP does not require any additional software so someone somewhere has to get their facts straight. It's just a USB device it should work like a memory key!

Yep, I have the exact same problem with mine. I'm contacting the Canon support # and hope they can help. It worked flawlessly for the first 9 months we had the camera, then all the sudden....can't upload photos, USB not recoginzing the camera, etc......VERY frustrating considering the $$ spent on this camera.

No matter what I have tried, my Canon Powershot S51S is not recognized when I plug it into my computer and turn the camera on. The power mode light that is supposed to turn yellow when I plug the camera into the computer never turns yellow, and my computer cannot see the camera at all! How am I supposed to download it?

ALTERNATE WAY TO TRANSFER PHOTOS AND VIDEOS TO A COMPUTER
If your photos and videos are stored on the memory card, then remove the memory card from the camera and insert it into an USB memory card reader. Connect this USB memory card reader and memory card into the USB port of your working computer. Your computer will see this as an USB Mass Storage Device or an external storage device; you can then open the folder on the memory card and copy the photos and to your computer. Memory card reader is a handy device and is inexpensive. You can copy photos from other cameras and you can also download photos off your memory card to someone else's computer without the need of installing any programs.

Make sure the camera is on and pc is selected on the camera screen when connected to the computer. You will need to have PC highlighted and select ok on the camera as this starts the camera and computer to communicate. Once communication established the LCD screen of the camera goes dark and the computer should generate a removable disk drive. Check the System Tray (lower right corner beside the PC time) for Safely Remove Hardware. When you click on it, it should read "Safely Remove USB Mass Storage Device Drive ?:" If you dont see that, then check the Device Manager to see if the camera is recognized as USB Mass Storage Device. The camera uses the driver usbstor.

Connection between camera and computer

What operating system are you using? Is you camera connected via USB? Have you tried using another USB port? Did you make sure to install the software before plugging in your camera?

Generally if you are running Windows 98, you will need to reboot after installing the software to even have a chance of the camera being recognized correctly.

If you are running Windows 2000, XP or Vista, the camera should be recognized and a driver installed or searched for from the CD software you installed before plugging in the camera.

Sometimes if you plug in the camera first without installing the software, the PC finds a new device with no driver. You can see this by going to Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Manager and you should see and exclamation on a device in the list. You need to remove this item and reboot your PC.

Now install the software first and when the install is done, then plug in your camera. Generally this works out pretty well.
