I have created a password for my user account, not the admin. I created my password from within my user account and everytime I try to login it says user name or password incorrect. Now the second thing is, I create a password for my user account from the admin account and it works fine. Why can't my account make a password for itself and only the admin account can?

Make sure your account has admin rights as well. For quick access of your account, login as admin then

  1. go to run
  2. type control passwords2
  3. Choose the profile that you like to edit then choose properties
  4. Go to Group Membership then choose Administrator
  5. Restart the computer
This should allow you to create or modify your password even inside your own profile

I typed "control passwords2" in run. It did nothing.

  • Anonymous Nov 29, 2010

Sorry, it should be "control userpasswords2"

I forgot my adminastor password

Elevate a secondary account outside of the admin account to admin status, then login as it and change your admin password. If you don't have a secondary user account, you can create one (and elevate it to admin status) by running the following from the command line:

net user "useraccount" "password" /add
net localgroup administrators "your pc's name"\"useraccount" /add

Of course, remove the quotations and insert the user account name, your pc's name, and the password where those words show up. That should allow you to get into Windows with admin privelages and change the administrator password. I do it through the "manage" function by right clicking on My Computer. Then go to Local Users and Groups, fo to the users folder, right click on your administrator account and hit "Set password". Hope this helps!

How to recover forgotten admin password for windows xp ?

Option 1: If the user you have is an administrator account, go to the control panel and select user accounts. When you are in user accounts, find the account you want to remove the password from and you will see the option there.

Option 2: If your user is NOT administrative, you can use ERD commander to reset it. You basically burn ERD onto a CD and it will boot when you restart. There is a program called Locksmith that will remove or change the password for you.
