Question about Acer Aspire 5100 Notebook

1 Answer

External hard drive

I have installed a Maxtor OneTouch 4 Plus external hard drive.
After copying the files to the hard drive, I am unable to delete the files from the C drive. I need permission. This is my home computer and I have administration rights. My computer has Windows Vista installed.
How do I complete the transfer of the files and the removal from the C Drive?
Thanks
Ellen

I'm not overly familiar with Vista yet, but I believe that you will have to delete these as administrator. Use the Vista help menu, you'll find it there. If it's a program file you will need to uninstall, versus delete, from the add/remove programs in the control panel.

If i re-install windows, will it default my settings and delete all my data? i have not purchased a backup hard drive.

If you install windows again formatting your hard drive to restore factory default you will lose all of your data.
Even if you are not doing this operation is a good thing to always have a backup of your data. One good way to back it up is to buy an external hard drive and copy your data on it regularly or burning cds with your data files.

Hi there,
please check if you can remove and reinsert the hard drive from its's location. usually you would have to remove 3 or 4 screws on the bottom part of the laptop and slide the hard drive out. once it's out put it back in and make sure that it's tightly on its place.
If this does not work you may have to replace the hard drive because the message means that it cannot detect the hard drive and it might just have to be replaced.

How can i increase my dell B / 120 inspiron harddisk?

1. You can buy a bigger hdd and replace the existing
2. If your system has the ability for a second hdd, you can buy a new disk and install it as a second hdd.
3. You can compress the existing disk to put more thing in it.4. you can delete unnecessary files, uninstall useless softwares, serach for duplicate files and delete extra copies of them and increase the free space.

Despite 3 re installs, my laptop keeps bluescreening after 3 or for days. It keeps deleting dll files Any suggestions?

This sounds like a virus that folows you from install to install, I would suggest the folowing

1) save all the data to an external source

2) do a secure wipe of the full hard drive in the system

http://www.stanford.edu/group/security/securecomputing/data_destruction_Dban.html

you can download the .iso file and burn it to a cd with your favorite cd
burning software

3) re-install the operating system (again, sorry)

4) at this point do not copy anything over from your backup, first verify that the system is stable and doesnt delete dll files and blue-screening, if this is true, continue on, if not, either it is a *very* reselliant virus (possible, not likely though) or you have a hardware issue (i would start with trying a different hard drive, and moving on from there)

however if the system does seem stable, slowly move your old backed up data to your reinstalled operating system, only doing small chunks at a time and making sure it doesnt crash. if at some point it starts showing the symptoms again, it is likely that section of data that was most recently copied that is either corrupted or has a virus.

if all the data copies over and you maintain a stable system, then problem solved!

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Thanks,
Mike

Hello i have a dell mini 910 and it has no space on it. i've heard of dual booting. how could i save, install, and run programs from an external hard drive

using an external HDD doesn't require dual booting.

First connect the external drive, and copy files to the drive that don't require and applications to be installed (MP3s, Avi Videos, Pictures)

Then you can delete the files from the HDD, this will immediately give a boost in performance. Generally, most games run a an Atom powered system don't take a great deal of space, so moving applications to the external drive likely would not be gratly beneficial as keeping data files there.

Dual booting by the way, is the process of installing 2 operating systems on a computer and being able to boot to more than one version. (Windows XP and Vista for example) of Windows and another OS (XP and Linux)

Need to transfer copied files to x301 after full restore

create a new folder in your hard-disk and first try to copy 1-2 files from the external hard-drive to the new folder (copy any data/work/images you have stored/created not any files of windows folder or root of c: drive)

if the above copy works then copy back all except the c: root and these folders - Windows folder, Document & settings, Program Files

Installation problem

It means the install cannot see or detect the hard disk and is caused by :-
Incorrect BIOS setting for the hard drive.
or
A faulty hard drive.
or
The hard drive is not seated correctly on the hard drive connector.

Test the hard drive in another laptop or attach the hard drive to an USB hard drive adapter and plug it into a working computer's USB port, if it see the drive as an external drive and you can copy and delete files to this drive then it is OK and the fault is with the laptop.

Installing win xp from external hard drive

Umm...is your laptop crashed??? Usually ntlldr issues ****. try to delete the former installation so a new ntldr file can be installed so as to not conflict with the damaged ntldr file that is on the pc blocking the install. It sounds like your setup is ok...at the very least get another xp cd to make sure the disk is not damaged that you are loading windows from.
