Question about Panasonic Toughbook CF-51 Notebook

1 Answer

Beeping Blues I have a CF-51 toughbook. The computer still runs, with the exception of some of the programs running kind of goofy. When I start up the computer, it beeps until I push F2 to enter setup. Once in the setup I exit without saving changes, and the beeping ceases as windows xp loading screen appears. The beeps are short and continous. Anyone know what could be going on

Something has hung up. Try removeing hardware, ie... battery, cd drive, keyboard, etc... until you find the nonessential piece of hardware that is hanging up your boot process. (nonessential to the operating system)

To reinstall your operating system, you must have a CD drive in your multimedia pocket.

Note: CF-51 (Mk2) and CF-51 (Mk3) can also boot to an external Panasonic USB CD drive.

When the laptop is first powered on, the Panasonic name appears in white lettering with the phrase 'Press F2 to enter Setup' directly below it. When this phrase appears on the screen, immediately press F2 on your keyboard. Put the Panasonic recovery CD in your drive and use the arrow keys to move to the boot tab. Change the order of boot so the CD drive boots first. To do this, highlight the CD drive and press F6 until CD drive is the No. 1 listing. Press F10 to save your changes, exit and follow the instructions when your CD starts running.

Panasonic CF-51,s are becoming common on Ebay but most do not have hard drives or caddies installed. The caddies cost more than the computers & are almost impossible to find for sale.Is it possible to...

I found this via pendrivelinux.com:

So try that out. I just got a toughbook cf-51 and will try it soon myself. Mine came with an XP reg code so maybe that can run from a virtual machine inside of linux.
My advice is to resist the urge to drop yours onto cement from a couple of feet. Not quite that tough.
The hard drive caddy is "the catch", for certain.
Too lazy to look into what the hdd connector is for that, maybe there's a cable or converter somewhere.

Need to reset or erase admin password

There are Linux password removal programs on the Internet. It is designed to remove passwords on NT, Win 2K and XP.
You copy the program to a CD and boot up from this CD. It allows you to reset or remove the users and administrator passwords.
Google search for these programs "password recover" There is another solution. You can reinstall windows and this will give you a clean computer and possibly better performance without the accumulated junk/rubbish. Don't forget to get/download all the device drivers (eg. video, audio, modem,NIC etc.) before you start.

Panasonic CF-51 Toughbook Fn keys don't work at all

The following website contains the needed drivers:

https://eww.pavc.panasonic.co.jp/pc/cgi-bin/itn/toughbook/dl01.cgi

Select your model of CF-51 Toughbook, but you MUST be specific. There are about nine variations of the CF-51 so you must use the right drivers.

Download the hkeyapp, hkeyset, and hotkey files and unpack all files. Use the default unpack locations. If you download the files for a laptop version that is not your own, when you try to run any of these files the computer will tell you that the file is not for your model. If the files successfully unpack then you know you have the right files.

For hkeyset and hkeyapp you must run the set-up applications in the unpacked folders.

Go to Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager and go to Other Devices.

The Hotkeys will appear as an "Unknown Devices" so if there is more than one, right click and choose "Update Driver".

Select "Install driver from specific location" and direct it to "C:\util2\drivers\hotkey" folder.

The computer will find the file and install the driver after which point you must restart the computer.

Hope this helps. It took me a while to figure this stuff out on my own so hope it speeds up somebody else's attempt.

Andrew
