I've tried a number of mini-disk and I still get the same error. Does that mean the player has come to the end of its life?

Hi,

If its doing it on all disc's it sound like the laser is dying or carriage mechanism is dying, if its either of these it will not be worth repairing it unless you can pick another MD player cheap and strip the parts out of it and replace them in yours, but thats if you feel comfortable doing the work yourself, if not its a replacement MD player i'm afraid.

Sorry.

Cheers

There are many people that have experienced this error, Sharp will do nothing for you and most likely you will end up throwing it away. I believe that the problem lies in your laser. You could try cleaning it with rubbing alcohol and a q-tip otherwise you can also try redownloading or resetting the firmware on the player. Sharp should have the firmware on their website otherwise other websites will provide it free too. Let me know if you have any other questions with it.

This type of player is not the type to be opened up by anyone without experience. There is also a magnetic head inside that is used to determine the correct track in cluding the TOC. This can be a simple repair or complex. If the optics are bad, the unit is not worth repair. Sometimes the optics just need an alignment. This requires test gear however and can not be done without it.

    Forgot to add:

    1) This problem is not caused by a bad battery. There is no battery inside that could cause this.

    2) While it is possible that the lens itself is dirty, in my experience this is not the case either.

Seams as though there are many reasons for this kind of error. The player is not getting a proper TOC from the disc and is failing. Could be motor failue, could be read head failue, could be electronics failure. Unfortunately this late in MiniDisc's life there is not much that is worth doing. You should be able to find some fairly inexpensive MiniDisc players on eBay.

Hi,

I am sorry to say this but you will have to get this repaired and this the only solution to fix the problem. The TOC error shows up when the unit can't read the Table Of Contents of the disc (and simply shuts down after trying). You can try cleaning the lens.

Please don't forget to or accept the solution.

Goodluck..

If you've tried several then the optical eye is shot. The error usually will only be for one disc, maybe two. I don't know what the repair will cost, may be a good excuse for an upgrade.

Usually the problem your describing is the result of a bad battery or a battery that needs to be reset. You can reset a battery by running it all the way down and then charging it up again all the way and then repeating that again. It does not matter if you plug the device in. If the battery is bad it will still likely cause this problem.

If the device is switching itself off and you cannot replace the batteries then the answer to your question is yet, the device is nearing the end of its usefullness.

Try another mini-disc, if the disc is working fine, then there is a problem in the reader. You might have to replace it.

you could attempt to clean it, other than that take it in for repair or buy a new one.

Cd player will not play comes up with toc read, will not play any of the 3 cds.

It is possible that there could be some garbage in the main processor and to clear that out you need to unplug the unit from the wall for about 40 Min., and it will reset back to normal.

The CD feed gear is mis-aligned or broke. It need to be disassembled and repaired. Underneath the drive is a gear that drives the CD into place before it plays - it's stuck or broken. This is a common problem.

When I turn on the player...the "PROTECT" message comes up... I would like to know how to start this player...or how to bypass this message so it pplays. Hope somebody out there knows the...

protect means that the speakers are improperly hooked up or just not compatible with the amp.

ensure that the speakers are 8-16 ohms, that no wires are crossed, and no wire strands are loose, which could touch and short. a 4 ohm speaker or a short in the wiring is almost always the cause of a protect error.

if all of this is checked, and it still says "protect" then it is fried.

This is a typical problem when the laser " eye" gets dust on it, unplug the unit and you can try to remove cover and spray the optical pickup "eye' with canned compressed air or other type of optical cleaner found at say like radio shacks, I have solved many disc reading errors with this method

Mini disc player will not read disc

Minidisc player is just a small version of a CD player and has the same types of issues. Either the lens is diry or the optics are failing. Try cleaning the lens using a cotton swab and alcohol. If that fails to resolve the problem, the optics assembly will need to be replaced.

HDMI Compatibility

It sounds to me like you have a HDMI Control issue. It sounds like the DVD player wants to control the receiver. Try turning off hdmi control on the TV, reciever, and the dvd player in their setup menus.

Let me know if this helped,
